Premier Hamiota inaugurates the 70th Agricultural Fair as grounds bustle with activity and ideal weather. More than 1750 adults and children attend as spectators and participants arrive for opening day ceremonies.
Wm Angus died at 87 after a 10 day illness in Hamiota Hospital. Born in Banffshire Scotland in 1875, he homesteaded in Scotia district, later farmed near Hamiota with wife Margaret Sangster. Survived by five children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, he was a community figure noted for kindness and service. Funeral in Hamiota United Church with burial in Hamiota Cemetery.
The plum erama sponsored by the Dept of Agriculture Dept of Health and Manitoba Hydro tours farm homes to show plumbing and pressure systems. Exhibits include water system equipment septic model and home appliances with pamphlets and free admission at Lawrence Mathison farm on August 1 from 1 30 to 5 00 PM.
Thirty-one clubs with 400 members and 87 leaders took part in the Hamiota Shoal Lake Inter-District Rally on July 11 at the Hamiota Fair Grounds. Diane Williams of the Miniota Sewing Club won the queen title and Eaton Gold Watch as outstanding member. Glen Bridge of Decker Calf Club earned the Gold Watch for Agricultural Clubs, with Shirley Bomek and Lorretta Hyraak named Senior Dress Review Princesses. The parade, led by the Hamiota Band and Majorettes, highlighted the event, with Decker Calf Club named Champion Club and Birtle Sewing Club Reserve Champion.
Hamiota Red Sox finish 17 7 after sweeping the end of the schedule to claim the pennant. Bob Brooks absorbed the Dauphin loss as Hamiota topped Lazare 17 10 with Al Robertson and Don Smith aiding the offense. Glennis Scott earlier clinched the title with a win over Lazare.
Manitoba health officials say Canada's system compares favorably with the top nations at a World Health Organization assembly in Geneva. Dr Morley Elliot, Manitoba deputy minister of health, was among four Canadian reps at the UN sponsored meeting in early May and returned to Winnipeg on July 3 after a vacation.
Manitoba pioneer Mrs. Robert Runchy died at 85 in Courtney B C where she lived with daughter Nora Watson. Born Charlotte Saunders in Ottawa on August 9 1876 she married Robert Charles Runchey in 1903 and lived in Barracks Narrows Hamiota Shoal Lake Crandall Crandall United Church conducted the funeral July 19 with Rev. W Christie officiating.
Jaanita Mary Garlick and Lawrence Wayne Richardson wed in a double ring ceremony at Westminster United Church Shoal Lake on June 23. Reverend A McColl officiated with Miss Diane Menzies singing. The couple will reside in Shoal Lake after a motor trip east. Out of town guests attended from McConnell Strathclair Winnipeg Bran don Cordova Pilot Mound Aran Sask Hamiota Virden Cardale Inglis and Greyville.
