Finance minister Eric Stefanson announced Manitoba achieved a record 156.5 million dollar surplus for 1995 96, the first in 20 years. He noted improved own source revenues and Canada Assistance Plan recoveries while stressing continued debt reduction and transfer of the surplus to the fiscal stabilization fund.
After a sod turning 11 months earlier the Oak Dale Senior Housing Complex held its grand opening on Sunday July 14. About 150 attendees including local dignitaries heard how Canada Manitoba Infrastructure Works funding totalled 300000 and local donations covered remaining costs enabling a debt light project. The six suite facility includes a common room library office and nurse’s station and began occupancy in April with a short waiting list.
Manitoba Taxpayers Association director Brian Kelcey calls on Brandon residents and rural Manitobans to back privatizing the Manitoba Telephone System despite fears of higher local rates. He argues gains from new investment and up to 30 million dollars in annual debt savings justify the sale and predict future tax cuts, while criticizing government monopolies and the existing ad campaign.
