Health Minister L L Desjardins announced an August 1 1983 rate increase from 12.55 to 12.70 per day for all personal care home residents in Manitoba and for patients in hospitals awaiting admission to personal care homes. He cited higher costs in the insured program.
McConnell 4 H Beef Club marked 50 years with a day in McConnell featuring 250 attendees, from Victoria to Dryden. The event included achievements, speeches by former leaders, a smorgasbord, a skit, certificates, honorary memberships, and dancing, ending with thanks to helpers and an anniversary cake.
Miniota hosts a successful sports day with 24 men teams and 8 women teams. Buckingham Stubble Jumpers beat Harmsworth for the A side, Pipestone defeated Virden Merchants for the B side, Elkhorn tops Miniota A for the Ladies A, and Virden defeats Shoal Lake for the Ladies B.
The Hamiota Lions Club begins a nonprofit Infant Car Seat rental program for the community and surrounding district. Seats by Chrysler Canada Ltd meet Canada Safety Standards and cost far less than buying new. Rental is 15 dollars for seven months with a 15 dollar refundable deposit. Health Minister L L Desjardins says Brandon General Hospital is reducing long waiting lists for surgery and physiotherapy without extra funding. A commission review showed in December 1982 865 patients waited, rising to 1071 in March 1983, then 1006 by May as renovations and scheduling changes restore capacity and use of beds. Negotiations continue to address physiotherapy and occupational therapy delays.
On July 9 a family gathering in Cardale arena honored Mr and Mrs Pat McArter on their 25th wedding anniversary. Rainy weather did not dampen spirits as four children and many relatives from Swan River Brandon Virden Winnipeg and other towns attended with grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Family and friends honored Bill Delbridge on his 80th birthday at Lilac Residence in Hamiota on July 10. Seventy five guests enjoyed a smorgasboard supper in the lounge.
