Manitoba hog quality focus shifts to leaner, slower maturing swine
Doug Stevenson of the Manitoba Department of Agriculture urges producers to favor longer time to market and lean genetics to lift carcass quality. He notes Grade A hogs fetch higher prices than Grade B by about four and a half dollars per cwt for 150 lb carcasses, and explains backfat heritability. A new grading system next year will use two back fat measurements to estimate yield quality. A demonstration at the Hamiota Fair on July 26 offers hands on probing and discussion with the department specialist.
