At a Westman recreation staff meeting, Dennis Decker was presented an award. The speech lauds his brave service testing baby swings to protect children, notes his injury from a broken leg, and honors him with a quirky left over pet show trophy.
Shiloh Community marked its centennial on June 26 with 300 plus attendees including former ministers and relatives. The celebration featured a service titled The New Dawn, a full choir, a birthday cake, a barbecue dinner, floral tributes, and greetings from presbytery and visiting ministers. The event highlighted the church’s 1903 opening, long memories, and ongoing community support.
Lorne and Jean Gompf celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a June 25 1983 supper and dance at Kenton Memorial Hall. Carolyn Lief Kevin Lief and Shannon Gompf organized a surprise evening while Donnie and Mary Brown escorted the couple. Guests from far flung towns attended and gifts included a two tier cake and corsage boutonniere bound to the occasion.
Manitoba Water Services Board offers a $120000 water and sewer project to Hamiota under the Manitoba Jobs Fund. The cost will be shared equally by the board and the village. Construction is set to begin in the summer of 1983.
The Manitoba Government approves sixty two hundred dollar per capita grants totaling 39,602 for fourteen municipalities celebrating centennials in 1983. Grants and an engraved plaque are presented during centennial events by Municipal Affairs Minister A R Pete Adam. Beneficiaries include Carberry Neepawa Morris Harrison Ellice North Cypress Archie Miniota Elton De Salaberry Whitehead Odanah Daly and Saskatchewan with varied grant amounts listed.
Environment and Work place Safety and Health Minister Jay Cowan announced St John Ambulance will receive a $30,000 grant for industrial safety and first aid training in 1983 84. Funds come from the Workers Compensation Board Accident fund and are issued in four instalments. An estimated 6000 workers and employers will take part.
