Hamiota School News Closed for Summer Reopens in September
The Hamiota School will close on Thursday June 28 and reopen Tuesday September 4. The school earned the Strathcona Trust Shield for proficiency in physical training and fifteen cadets headed by Cadet Laurence Dixon left by bus for Clear Lake Camp. Canadians Flying in the R A F Halifax Bomber Ace
F OW.G. Hunsaker from Hamiota served as bomb aimer on Halifax bombers during his first operational tour. He dropped on 52 German targets in the Ruhr Valley Hamburg Ornabruck Chemitz Hanover and Worms and in France. An engine failure over the English Channel challenged the mission but he returned safely with the Halifax grounded by flak over the Dutch coast. Hunsaker joined the R C A F as a bandsman in 1940 and was active as a cornetist violinist with the Winnipeg Headquarters band until 1943 before resuming operations in 1944.
