Virden Liberals elect new executive at annual meeting

The Virden Liberal Association held its annual meeting on June 19 with Gladys Bray as President and Lyman Smith as Vice President. Dora Langlois becomes Secretary Treasurer as Ross Poole Sid Perlmutter Bill Lewycky Carol Ann Smith and Don Whiteford join the directors. Manitoba Liberal Leader Sharon Carstairs spoke predicting Liberals will field a candidate in all 57 seats and return to the Manitoba Legislature.

Robinson delegate at Ottawa economic summit meeting

Paul Robinson and five Forum for Young Canadians members met Canada’s Finance Minister Micheal Wilson in Ottawa after a week in the capital. The group toured the House of Commons the Senate the Supreme Court and the National Press Gallery and formed close bonds with other students.

Crandall W I Celebrates 70th Anniversary

Crandall W I marked its 70th anniversary with a Sunday afternoon program featuring Rocky Mountains slides set to Zamfir and Haggard Hardy music. Harry Andrews showcased photos from a Banff study, with Louise Hyndman MCing and former presidents recognized, followed by cake, a lawn meal, and visiting with attendees from Virden Birtle Le Pas Hamiota and Crandall districts.

Mites end season with win over Birtle

The Hamiota Mites 10 and under girls closed their season June 20 with a victory against Birtle. They finished 4-2 in league play and claimed the A side titles at Shoal Lake Hamiota and Strathclair, while dropping the A side final at Miniota.

Farewell party for two moved couples in Oak River

A social evening at Oak River Memorial Rink bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. R T Griffiths who moved to Hamiota and to Mr. and Mrs. Wm Davidson who moved to Rivers. Don Simms and Bill Hutchings spoke for the communities. Gifts included money for lamps and a tree with funds for shrubs. About sixty-five guests attended.

McConnell W I Hosts Community Fun Day

The McConnell Women’s Institute sponsored a Sunday event at the McConnell Community Centre drawing 60 to 70 attendees including families. A Horseshoe Tournament led the highlights with A side winners Jack Boyd and Earl Newton and B side winners Bruce Brewer and Ian McPhaden.
