Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Gourlay announced grants of 6000 dollars each for the Manitoba Association of Urban Municipalities and the Union of Manitoba Municipalities. The grants, matching the 1978 level, are traditionally paid annually to support the two organizations.
Manitoba municipalities will receive 25.1 million in provincial tax sharing for 1981, a 4.1 percent rise from 1980. Payments, based on 1976 census figures, include a basic 21 per capita share and an urban services supplement, with distribution via an order-in-council dated June 24 and payments due July 31, 1981.
Health Minister Bud Sherman reports 109,615 claims from 82,895 families totaling 10,121,994 paid by MHSC for 1980 Pharmacare. Average per family was 122.10 while 1979 figures were 104,438 claims for 79,579 families and 8,373,340 paid.
Agriculture Minister Jim Downey announces that agricultural societies may retain pari mutuel taxes up to their provincial grant value under The Agricultural Societies Act. The limit is 7500 dollars per day for up to 10 days a year, whichever is less, to speed grant distribution.
The University of Manitoba held its 102nd spring Convocation over six sessions to confer more than 2,600 degrees diplomas and certificates. Sessions occurred at Fort Garry Bison Building St Boniface College and Steinbach. Local graduates include Adele Lenore Heise Isabella Tanis Catherine Campbell Dianne Loree McGregor and Ritchie Peters among 1981 recipients.
The Red Cross Boating Safety Detachment Team BOSDET resumes summer travels across Manitoba to raise small craft safety awareness. Derek Friend leads the group with Judy Little and Dave Robinson joining to stage demonstrations at pools, lakes, and parks and aims to reduce boating accidents and drownings.
Manitoba residents affected by 1980 property tax relief misapplied by Revenue Canada should review their notices. The department acknowledges the error which reduced refunds or increased taxes for trailer court residents and homeowners who missed the 325 resident homeowners credit. Taxpayers must request correction through their preparer or Revenue Canada to secure up to a 325 refund.
