Spousal RRSP rules cut family tax bill in retirement
The spousal RRSP allows a high earning spouse to contribute to the other spouse’s RRSP to split retirement income. Limits apply: 20 percent of earned income up to 7500 in 1986, or 3500 if in a pension plan, with adjustments for existing plan contributions. By age 65, shifting 7500 into the spouse’s name can reduce tax from 6012.20 to 4582.39, saving 831.42 annually for the couple. Mr. Mardon of Investors Group explains the arrangement.
