Minerals Boost Cattle Gain and Feed Efficiency

In Manitoba cattle trials Dr Roy Boila of the University of Manitoba found that adding trace minerals copper zinc manganese selenium cobalt and iodine along with calcium and phosphorus raised average daily gain by 10 percent to 1.39 kg and improved feed efficiency by about 6 percent. Mineral-fed cattle used 303 kg of feed to gain 45 kg versus 323 kg for controls, saving 20 kg per animal. Boila notes copper deficiency often stems from molybdenum and sulfur in forage limiting copper absorption, and estimates a return of $2 to $4 per dollar spent on supplements. He cites copper interactions with other minerals and ongoing research with Dr Karen Witttenberg at Manitoba.
