January beef feeding tips from John Patterson
Manitoba Agriculture representative John Patterson outlines January feeding guidelines for beef cattle. Dry pregnant cows need 30 pounds of high quality grass or grass-legume hay with 55 percent TDN, plus extra energy in cold weather. First calf heifers weighing 1100 pounds require 25 pounds of good quality legume or grass-legume hay at 60 to 65 percent TDN, with ample water and 60 000 IU daily vitamin A. In late pregnancy energy needs rise as the fetus grows, and underfed cows show poorer reproductive performance. Extra shelter is advised in extreme cold. Patterson can be reached at 764 2767.
