Prescription abuse program starts in Winnipeg

The Multi ple Prescription Program took effect January 1 1990 to curb abuse of a restricted drug list. Health Minister Donald W Orchard said the system will track consumers and prescribers who misuse medicines. Registered prescribers must apply for a special prescription pad to issue listed drugs.

School Band Switches Fundraiser to Spices in Frost Hit Region

The school band cites a severe Florida frost cutting fresh oranges and grapefruit for their fundraiser. They will instead sell packaged spices for this year only while Manitoba Health funds start up costs and operating grants for a drug prescription monitoring program.

Every Penny Counts Hamiota Sports Complex Drive

Manitoba RCMP get second ALERT Mobile for road safety

Portage la Prairie reports the province handed over the keys to Manitoba's second ALERT Mobile to the RCMP as part of a drive to curb impaired driving. In a ceremony Ed Connery presented the vehicle to Assistant Commissioner Dale Henry while Jim McCrae praised deterrence. The unit will support the CHECK STOP program outside Winnipeg with random breathalyzer checks and three month licence suspensions for refusals or failures.

Journey for Light 1990 Sixth Annual Lions Snowmobile Trek Begins

More than 25 Lions riders will tour a 500 mile route in Manitoba's Sixth Annual Journey For Light starting January 18 from The Pas with stops at Roblin Swan River and Birtle. The trek ends in Winnipeg for pledges on the Lions Telethon January 21. Proceeds fund sight conservation and donation awareness through equipment, medical standards, and public outreach.
