Maynes foursome victorious in District 3 curling

Hamiota Ladies Curling Club hosted the Manitoba Scott Tournament of Hearts District 3 event January 10 to 13. Barb Maynes from Hamiota won the A side by defeating Ken t on’s Sherrilyn Stewart, as the B side final saw Marilyn Schur’s Virden rink prevail to challenge for the district title, which Maynes captured in eleven ends. Maynes will represent District 3 at the Virden provincials February 2 to 6.

Oak River UCW meets discusses Native Church study

Unit 2 of Oak River United Church Women met at Eloise Hyndman’s home with 12 members. The group retained the Least Coin collection, elected Isabel Paddock as Sect Treasurer, and Barbara Angus planned a 1986 meeting schedule. They studied the Native Church in Keewatin Presbytery and heard about self governance desires. Lunch followed the discussion. next meeting set for February 13 at Mabel Paddock’s home.

Manitoba Hydro Rate Increase Set for April 1 1986

Manitoba Hydro announces an average 2.8 percent rate hike effective April 1 1986 aimed at generating 19.6 million in net revenue for the year ending March 31 1987. Chair Marc Eliesen says low inflation keeps real electricity prices falling for Manitobans while reserves rise to support rate stability under low water. A typical residential bill would rise about 80 cents monthly for usage of 700 kilowatt hours.

Hamiota District Raises Over $2.6K for Children's Aid

Thanks to local generosity the December 6 and 7 Children's Aid weekend in Hamiota and District netted 2682.82 dollars, up 10.4 percent from 1984. From 1977 to 1985 the area contributed 18350.00 to the Children’s Aid Society of Western Manitoba.

Isabella UCW meet reflects Christmas program and plans

Fourteen members gathered at Hollis Stewart's home on December 9 for a Christmas program with readings hymns and a story. Ruth Teasdale outlined the annual meeting and reports while the treasurer noted party funds. Upcoming events include A Voice in the Wilderness Cantata December 15 Miniota and a December 21 community party with a December 22 family communion service.

Pensioners to receive higher benefits in January

Health minister Jake Epp announced increases effective January 1986 for Old Age Security and related programs. Monthly OAS rises to 285.20. GSS singles to 338.95. married GSS per spouse to 220.75. Spouse's and Widowed Spouse's Allowances up to 505.95 and 558.59 respectively. CPP maximums also grow with a 4 percent annual adjustment.
