The New Year welcomed Mona Corinne Klagenberg as Hamiota’s Little Miss 1971 arriving at 18 50 on Monday January 11. Parents Jorgen and Carol Klagenberg weigh six pounds three and a half ounces.
December 31 1970 at Hamiota Hospital featured a centennial wind up with a surprise for Dr and Mrs W K Hames on their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. The couple received a silver and walnut clock and an engraved silver tray while hospital staff gave a humorous gift. The event included speeches by Mr John Rankin and a flag lowering ceremony followed by punch fruit cake and singing Auld Lang Syne.
The Annual Homecoming Bonspiel at Hamiota on Boxing Day drew 16 rinks after turning away six entries. Dallas Johns rink won the event with Ed Mathison and his team taking second place. Glen Stewart and Paul August tied for third and fourth.
Celebrated couple W Kerr Fraser and his wife Edna Wallace were honored on Sunday December 27 at the Fraternal Hall Hamiota for their 50th wedding anniversary. Over 170 guests signed the guest book and family members attended including sons W Wallace of Hamiota and Dr C M of Rahway New Jersey and daughter Irene Wilson.
The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 held its organizational meeting in Crandall on January 4 1971 at 8 p.m. Trustees present included Waddell Rapley Butcher Lewycky Ham es Fouillard Hyndman and Armitage. Waddell was elected chairman and Earl A Butcher vice chairman. Committees were formed for 71 including Building & Property Personnel & Public Relations Finance Transportation and Salary. The group approved minutes, correspondence, a lease form, salary increments, Manitoba Association of School Trustees membership, and budget actions including tire purchases and route cancellation, with adjournment at 11:15 p.m.
Tom Moffatt of Geekie with Jim Geekie Fraser Moffatt won Zone 11 Consul in Hamiota after two days of play. Don Lee and Crandall rink forced a final game by defeating Moffatt once. Caldwell and Strachan also competed, with Lee reaching a double confrontation and Moffatt advancing as Zone 11 representative.
The Ladies Club met January 7 at Mrs. Janelle Houck’s home with sixteen members. Group 1 led devotionals, a life item by Janie Lewis, and a business session with annual reports. Secretary Laura McLean noted average attendance seventeen and eight with perfect attendance. A Mizpah Benediction closed the segment followed by two contests and a luncheon hosted by Houck, Smith, and Lewis.
The Red Cross appeals for public support highlighting ongoing disaster relief and standing readiness. Volunteers describe how donations fund blood drives trainings and emergency services to aid communities in need.
The hospital outlines planned upgrades including updated operating room facilities with sterile barriers and adjacent dressing areas, a renovated sterilizing area, a two bed recovery ward, expanded bed use with five single and nine double wards plus a two bed children’s ward and nursery, accessible washrooms, separate utility rooms, ward staff separation, a patient solarium, nourishment center on wards, outpatient dressing rooms, and comprehensive air conditioning across the building.
Oswald and Alfred Blaich of Miniota marked their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house attended by relatives from across the region. Born in Germany and married December 25, 1920, they emigrated to Canada in 1930 and farmed near Beulah before retiring in 1968 to Miniota. The couple, active in church and community, have two sons, five grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
W I held its annual meeting on January 5 at 2 30 p m. Treasurer reported 246 80 on hand. 29 members attended with average 18 6. Ten directors chosen with officers including President Lena Armstrong and Secretary J J Ward. Convenors listed for Red Cross Social Home Economics and Health United Nations Cultural Activities Citizenship Education Agriculture and Membership. Visitors attended most meetings.
December 1970 CGIT group events include Vesper Service on December 13 with the theme Christmas Now Anybody Care. A bake sale in the Community Room was held on a Saturday. Christmas caroling on December 23 visited hospital and Senior Citizens homes.
