Snowmobile Act Introduces Broad New Regulations

The Snowmobile Act requires registration and display plates for all snowmobiles, mandatory lights and mufflers, and bans on roadway use. Operators face license checks, cross at intersections only, and potential six month registration suspensions. Police may seize offending snowmobiles until case resolution.

Manitoba prohibits discriminatory job ads under new act

Manitoba lawmakers highlight a new act banning sex and other discrimination in help wanted and advertising. It creates a Human Rights Commission with powers to investigate and seek injunctions, with fines from 50 to 500 dollars for individuals and 200 to 1000 dollars for groups.

Blanshard Bids Farewell To Century

A December 31 gathering at the Blanshard school auditorium marked Manitoba’s Centennial and welcomed the 2nd century. Chairman Frank McPhaden opened with pupil singers, introduced a time capsule to seal for 21010, and items included a 75th Blanshard Anniversary book, history and essays, poetry by local students, guest lists, a Blanshard Song, a Brandon Sun song sheet, a Centennial Medal, and agricultural samples from 1970.

Christmas fundraiser and nurse volunteers at Hamiota District Hospital

The Hamiota Hospital Nursing staff held a smorgasbord supper on December 9 to honor twenty Candy Stripers from the local collegiate. Gifts and in residence entertainment were provided by Student Practical Nurses, now in their fourth year.

Ladies Night At Lodge Officers Installation 1971

After installing 1971 Lodge Officers the wives of members enjoyed a serial hour with Master of Ceremonies Fred Assenstine. Shoal Lake masons led by Murray Jenkins and Peter Funk assisted by Charlie Giebert Ester Smith Henry Hadland and Billie Lewycky Hamiota Lodge officers listed. Grand Master John L Rankin welcomed visiting brethren and ladies. Mrs Vere Little spoke for the ladies.

Changes In Crop Insurance Announced Manitoba Farmers

Manitoba farmers with all risk crop insurance can drop wheat coverage to qualify for protection. They must insure two of 13 insurable crops or meet minimum acreage rules. The 13 insurable crops include wheat oats barley flax peas rye rapeseed mustard potatoes sugar beets sunflowers buckwheat and grain corn.

Zone XI Cons Playdowns continue in Hamiota with semifinals on Saturday January 9 at 1 00 p m. Harold Wassien of Binscarth Arnold Pirie and Tom Moffatt of Strathclair and Lorn Caldwell of Hamiota remain undefeated.
