Hamiota Opens Hamiota Centennial Library Branch

Parkland Regional Library opens the Hamiota Centennial Library on Maple Street. The 1800 square foot center costs about 90,000 dollars with half funded by a provincial grant. It offers 3000 volumes, weekly hours, and a Request Service for mail delivery of non printed materials.

Johnston Skates With Local Club During Christmas Break

Lyndon Johnston, nationally ranked skater, visited his hometown club in Hamiota on December 21. He spent two hours coaching figure skaters and ringette members after competing at the regional Winnipeg finals where he and partner Melinda Kunggi won the St. Pairs and he finished second in singles. He heads to the Canadian Championships in Regina in mid January.

Oak River U C W holds annual meeting in church

Nineteen members of the Oak River U C W attended the January 3 1984 annual meeting in the church. Jean Hutchings opened with a New Year poem. Reports covered finances donations and activities including shipments to the Unitarian Society of Canada and God's Narrows Manitoba. The 1984 executive was installed by Rev Delgary and $800 in M and S givings were set.

Chumah Ladies Club maps year with centennial plans

The Chumah Ladies Club met January 5 at Myra Preston home with 16 members. Myra led worship theme New Year. Betty Smith led business. Attendance averaged 14 with 7 perfect last year. Reports cited busy year and centennial celebrations. social and friendship committees active with cards and gifts. Plans included helping Hamiota centennial, July picnic, time capsule at Cairn Site, quilt work for centennial, and decorating a car for the fair parade. A “Jim Dandy Sermon in Soap” contest preceded lunch.

Canada Packers Sponsor Quilting Competition at Local Fairs

Quilting contest across Harding Kenton Lenore and nearby districts invites groups or individuals to enter exhibits. Local fairs select top quilts for district victory then provincial competition. Champion quilt sold to Canada Packers for 700 dollars. rules via Pauline Campbell Kenton 838-2197.

Miniota Women’s Institute boosts fire dept funds

Miniota Volunteer Fire Department gains two cheques totaling 597.97 from the closing of local Women’s Institute funds. The funds, and a history project by Miniota and Arrow River WI, support the Quick Response Unit. The WI dissolved November 30 1983 after decades of community work.
