Virus Diseases Increasing Threat To Hogs In Manitoba
Dr. John Agar of the Manitoba Department of Agriculture reports a winter rise in hog virus cases, with vomiting and wasting disease and porcine encephalitis causing severe symptoms and high piglet mortality. No vaccines exist, and farm hygiene and isolation are key to control. Pasture management also affects summer dairy yields, with a Manitoba trial showing steady milk flow and economic gain per pasture acre.
