The seventh annual Birtle Presby terial United Church Women meeting on February 17 1970 in Chumah Hall Hamiota featured a focus on Our Indian People with speakers Alan Pratt and Chris Beaulieu of the Manitoba Indian Brotherhood They urged personal outreach understanding and government petitions The meeting noted the Indian Women's Association of Manitoba and elects officers for 1970 including Mrs J E Hudson as past president and Mrs G Long as treasurer The service concluded with a noon communion meditation by Rev Ralph Clark and a closing poem I Am Indian Youth highlighting unity in faith

Easter Seal Campaign Underway With Wendy Graham Tammy

The 1970 Easter Seal Tammy features eleven year old Wendy Graham of Minto Manitoba born May 15 1958. Wendy a Grade 5 student and pianist represents handicapped children statewide as she aids the campaign February 26 to March 29 in rural Manitoba areas. The goal is 50000 dollars led by The Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Manitoba.

Hospital board discusses expansion plans for Hamiota facility

Ken Home niuk of Manitoba Hospital Commission and Frank DeCock of the Manitoba Hospital Association met February 19 with the Hamiota Hospital District No. 7A Governing Board to explore financing for the proposed renovation and addition. Municipal councils of Miniota Woodworth Blanchard Hamiota and the village of Hamiota will review at upcoming meetings.

Hamiota 4H Pony Club Holds February Meeting

The Hamiota 4H pony club met February 10 at Hamiota Collegiate with ten members present. Members delivered speeches as roll call and decided to have speeches at the next meeting. Juniors studied the green book and seniors the blue book for public speaking practice. The next meeting is scheduled for March 2.

Vincent Massey tops local girls basketball tourney

Hamiota Vincent Massey Collegiate of Fort Garry won the fifth annual girls basketball tournament on the weekend. Massey defeated Weyburn 55-15 and Estevan 47-22 before beating Glenlawn of St. Vital 34-33 in the final. Brenda Earl led Massey with 15 points, and Ann Sisler totaled 41 across three games. Next year Regina teams are expected to participate.

Annual Father and Son Banquet in Hamiota

The Hamiota Boy Scouts and Cubs held a successful father and son banquet on February 19, 1970, with about 70 attendees. Presentations were made by Past District Commissioner Wilf Dennison. Rene Lepine and Art Oakden received ten year service buttons and leader medals. Lepine thanked the group for a prior presentation. Two films were shown to close the evening.

Pay Negotiations Halt Between Manitoba School Boards

The Board of the Rolling River School Division and the Rolling River School Division Association of the Manitoba Teachers Society report five failed meetings from 1969 to 1970. They seek a Provincial Conciliator as talks stall. The board offers a 1.18 percent average salary increase while teachers seek 7.36 percent. Non monetary points have largely been settled.

The Cardale W I met February 18 with 11 members. Officers included Mrs G Cowan and recording secretary Mrs Jean Dennison. Roll call cited Centennial ideas and a thought for the day.

Hamiota Economic Club Holds Annual Meeting

The Hamiota Economic Club met February 13 in Chumah Hall with 22 members and seven mothers. They kept uniforms, heard speeches from Karen Brooks Doreen McBain and Sharon Carolson, and planned a May 4 event and a June rally in Hamiota. The next meeting is March 13 in the Community Room.
