Good Citizenship Award recipients named for 1983

The Tourism Industry Association of Manitoba announces six Manitobans named to the 1983 Good Citizenship Awards. Recipients include Lawrence Rubin Carman W A Bulman Winnipeg David Arthur Kinney Russell Elizabeth Macintosh Selkirk William Moncur Boissevain and Dr Stephen Toni Altona. Lieutenant Governor Pearl McGonigal will present the awards March 11 1984 at Portage la Prairie. Further details and profiles will be issued later with dinner tickets available through the association office.

Lyndon Johnston Wins January MSF Sports Award Nomination

Lyndon Johnston's silver at the National Figure Skating Championships in Regina earned him a January MSF Carling O'Keefe Sports Award nomination. In a ten nominee field from eight sports he won, ahead of athletes from swimming, cross country skiing, weightlifting, squash, handball, water polo, and speed skating. He trains at Preston Figure Skating Club with Melinda Kunheggi, listing Hamiota as home.

Youth Venture a success at Hamiota church

HAMIOTA The Hamiota Pentecostal Church hosted Youth Venture on February 11 drawing over 100 youths from eight assemblies across western Manitoba. Activities included skits, a talent contest, games, a slide presentation on Wing The Word, and an evening rally with Rev. Bill Ashbee and Pastor Gordon Stock. Participants were encouraged to attend the District Youth Convention in Morden March 23 25.

Arrow River W I meeting notes and plans

The February Arrow River W I meeting at Mrs Clegg’s with Donna Bonner presiding approved sending $25 to Miniota Musical Festival for a scholarship and buying a 4 H public speaking trophy. Plans include hosting Parkissimo Lodge February 22, supplying lunch for a February 17 Arrow River Hall pool meeting, sending two workers and 3 dozen cookies to Blood Donor Clinic in Hamiota, and Gary Everett spoke on loans with follow up discussion. Lunch closed the evening. host was Mrs Clegg.

Wildlife education grant announced for Delta Waterfowl Station

Winnipeg deputy minister Al Mackling announced a $1,000 wildlife education grant to the Delta Waterfowl Research Station. The facility, backed by the North American Wildlife Foundation, will hire a seasonal tour guide to meet public demand for Delta Marsh information. Visitors flock each summer to this renowned marsh on Lake Manitoba.

Manitoba Mental Health Association to receive $6630 grant

The Manitoba Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association will get 6630 to run rural women mental health workshops in southeastern Manitoba. Health Minister Monique Begin announced the grant, aimed at boosting discussion, coping strategies, and local self help groups, with hopes of forming a regional mental health association. The funds come from National Health and Welfare’s Health Promotion Contribution Program.

Emergency planning seminars scheduled in Manitoba

Manitoba EMO minister R. Adam announces February and March seminars across rural Manitoba to discuss the Provincial Emergency Plan and proposed Disaster Financial Assistance Policy. Sessions run 1 30 to 4 00 pm with experts Eckert and St Hilaire, dates and venues listed from Teulon to Somerset. The plan sets provincial municipal roles and outlines cost sharing for disasters and potential federal aid above 1 per capita.

McConnell 4 H Beef Club meets for plans and events

The McConnell 4 H Beef Club met at Don Murray's home on February 14 to discuss Rally Day on June 2 at Kenton, a curling bonspiel in Cardale on February 25 with a 2.50 entry, raffles with prizes of 50 and 25, an April 19 bingo and dance, and demonstrations on Travelling and building bird houses by Carla, Lindsay, Dale, and Jason. Lunch was served by Mrs. Murray after adjournment.
