In 1981 Canadian credit unions quietly offered weekly mortgage payments, cutting interest and speeding payoff. A $30,000 loan with weekly $129 payments could nearly halve the mortgage term, saving about $73,000 in interest over the life of the loan and letting owners reach equity faster.
