Farmers urged to buy registered rust resistant wheat varieties
Farmers are advised to purchase registered seed of Renown Thatcher Apex and the newer Regent when available. First and second generation registered Apex Thatcher Renown will be sold next spring, with Regent not expected until 1941. Registered seed is purer and more true to variety, so buying a few bundles alongside certified seed is recommended for clean summer fallow.

Longevity of seeds across species and eras
Seeds vary greatly in viability with some species enduring centuries. Pea family seeds may stay viable over 100 years while willow and poplar seeds last decades. Tests show Senna seeds from 1776 germinated after 158 years. Mimosa seeds 81 years old yielded germination. red clover 81 years old germinated at 2.6 percent. Wheat oats barley often germinate well to about ten years, then decline. ripening and harvesting can further reduce germination. A Japanese botanist reports 100 percent germination for Oriental Lotus seeds buried at least 120 years. Always test germination before sowing.
Experimental Farm Notes Wheat Beats Barley for Hogs
Tests at Brandon Experimental Farm during last summer show wheat outperforms barley in hog growth and feed efficiency. For pigs up to 110 pounds, a 1.15 pound daily gain with equal parts ground wheat and oats, versus 1.03 with barley and oats, and 11 percent less feed per 100 pounds gain with wheat. Finishing pigs benefited from a three to one mix of wheat and oats, improving gain and reducing feed need. Market prices favor wheat as economical, to be coarsely ground and gradually increased in the ration.

Do Not Include Apples in Overseas Gift Parcels
The British Ministry of Agriculture and Canadian Pest Act rules warn against including apples in mixed parcels sent to service members overseas or civilians in the British Isles. Perishable fruit risks damage to the package and other mail, and longer transit times during wartime reduce edible delivery. Certification is required for gift parcels containing apples, with inquiries directed to the nearest Dominion Fruit Inspector.
