WINNIPEG Public Works and Highways Minister Joseph Borowski reports rising complaints about buses and trucks exceeding speed limits on provincial highways. He notes most drivers obey laws but urges firms to remind employees to stay within legal limits to preserve public image and reduce enforcement costs.
OAK RIVER The annual White Gift Service was held Sunday evening in the United Church with a smaller crowd. CGIT Explorers and Messengers groups presented the Christmas message led by Barbara Coulson. Readers included Mrs Frank Hayhurst Lyla Coulson and Penny Haggarty. Candle lighters were Kim Espey Diane Shemray Joanne Marty nuk Lori Walden and Prenda Coulson. Preschoolers gave gifts and sang Away In A Manger. Pianists were Mrs Fraser Angus Debbie Griffiths and Karen Espey. organist Mrs R T Griffiths. Rev Victor Bowins gave the benediction.
The Ladies Legion Auxiliary held a Christmas Party December 9 in the Community Room attended by about 40 members and friends. They played 10 Bingo games, enjoyed a singing session, and some won cakes, a door prize, and a candy jar guessing game. Winners included Mrs Ethel Baldwin and Kenny Pediow.
Eleven members and friends met at Mrs. Les Leland’s home to view Christmas gift displays by Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Collier of Miniota. They planned to buy a larger coffee percolator and two tea pots labeled as their Centennial Project.
Zone XI curling clubs met at Shoal Lake Curling Rink on December 13 at 1 30 pm with 13 clubs represented. Three clubs couldn't attend but supported decisions. three said they did not receive letters. two showed no interest this year. Jack Hume of Oak River was elected vice-chairman and secretary treasurer. A $5 entry fee per rink was set for Zone Playdowns to fund winner and expenses.
The U C W held a Christmas gathering at Mrs J T Finkbeiner's home with 17 members and one visitor. Mrs G Weber presided, Group 4 presented a programme about Christ Comes to us in our Brother, interspersed with carols led by Mrs L Wright. The annual meeting followed with reports, budget for 1971, and adjournment by Mrs R E Heise and Mrs Art Heise.
The Hamiota United Church Women met December 10 at 2 p.m. in Chumah Hall with Mrs. C Johnston in the chair. Unit 2 presented a worship service and reports covered the Fall Event, budget for 71, treasurer’s statement, and a total membership of 320 with net changes for the year.
