Legion Bonspiel Winners at Hamiota Fraser Rink

Fraser’s foursome from Hamiota led by Ross Fraser with Nora Knight Les Kirk and Eileen Edwards won the annual Legion Bonspiel held November 14 1987. Eight visiting and eight local rinks played in a one day event. The Legion thanked prize donors and the Ladies Auxiliary for dinner and help.

Mable Brandon Memorial Fund Formed in Kenton

A public meeting at Kenton United Church on November 30 1987 created a Mable Brandon Memorial Fund Committee to raise funds for piano student awards in the Hamiota Virden Music Festival areas. Dr W K Hames Marie Siemens Eileen Kent Bettie Hames Helen Finnie Ina Slimmon named, donations invited. Mable Brandon taught piano to many in Kenton and surrounding districts before her death on August 4 1987.

Cargill Summit Award Honors Western Canada Leaders

Cargill recognizes top 10 elevator managers in Western Canada with the Summit Award for excellence in eleven management categories. Dave Martinussen of Oakner Manitoba is among recipients. Award events included a July trip to Prince Rupert BC and a Bran don awards dinner with engraved ring for Dave and plaque for Dennis Rudd for High Grain Handling.

4 H Fun Fair a success at Miniota Community Hall

Miniota 4 Hers hosted a successful Fun Fair on Friday November 27 at the Miniota Community Hall. Visitors tried Crown and Anchor, Bunny Roll, Bean Toss, Shuffle Card game 21, dart, ball throw, fish pond, and arm wrestling. Heather Leland won the door prize quilted horse picture. Marilyn Warkenton guessed nearest the beans and won candy. Barry Cornish won a Santa Claus cake raffle prize. Lunch, music, and bingo filled the event with thanks to donors and helpers.

Manitoba Social Allowances rise 5.3 percent in 1988

Len Evans announces an average 5.3 per cent increase in Manitoba Social Allowances starting January 1 1988 for food clothing personal needs and household supplies. The rise follows an annual review tied to inflation and the Nutritious Food Basket. The program aids those unable to work including disability and sole support cases, while municipalities maintain separate aid programs.

Midwest Recreation District Receives $10000 Grant

Culture Minister Judy Wasylycia Leis announced a ten thousand dollar grant to the Midwest Recreation District to cover salary costs for a full time recreation director. The district includes Kurs Municipalities Blanshard Hamiota Iitiniota Weedworths and the Birdtail Rolling River and Fort La Bosse School Divisions. The hire aims to deliver recreation culture heritage sport and fitness programs district wide.

Writer commissioned to produce anniversary book

SASKATOON The board of directors of Federated Co operatives Limited announces it has commissioned Brett Fairbairn of Saskatoon to write a book for the 60th anniversary of the Co operative Retailing System. Fairbairn, 29, is an assistant professor at the Centre for the Study of Co operatives, University of Saskatchewan. The release notes his Rhodes Scholarship, Oxford degrees, and a 1987 doctorate in Modern History. Back issues of The Co operative Consumer will aid research and become part of the Centre’s library. The anniversary launch is at FCL’s 1988 annual meeting in Saskatoon on March 2, with 1988 marketing programs over 60 weeks. The system serves 750,000 members through 340 co op stores. 1986 retail sales reached $1.9 billion.
