Telegram reports new telephone charges with business lines in Hamiota at 54.00 per year and residence at 21.00. A 10 percent discount applies for six months paid in advance. Rural phones profit 27.00 or 24.30 after cash discount. Commission cites higher material and labor costs for the increase.
Mr and Mrs Wm McKenzie and Miss Kate plan an Ontario trip starting Friday December 15 for about three months. Mr and Mrs Wesley Palmer also depart December 14 for an eastern journey. Fatal shock in community as Miss Goggins dies after pneumonia follow a cold. Methodist Sabbath School hosts supper and entertainment in Clelands hall Friday evening. Scout Concert tickets sell well with a program including drills songs a scene from King Arthur and more. Newhall opens Monday evening December 18 with a public gathering inviting all.
Nomination for Mayor two councillors and one trustee was called for. Mayor M A Whimster was renominated but has retired and Councillor J A Stewart was elected by acclamation. Alex Kerr and Jay McLean were elected to fill two council vacancies by acclamation. BE L Stone elected as trustee by acclamation after Neelands retirement. Public meeting followed with no new platforms or promises.
The Hamiets Agricultural Society held its annual meeting in the Council Chamber on Friday with strong farmer attendance and lively discussion. The President highlighted work by the Agricultural College and announced a spring show and sale of registered breeding stock, while the financials showed gate receipts were hurt by bad weather. Directors elected include A D McConnel J Strachan W J Stevens Chas Penry and others. officer roles were assigned after adjournment.
A fairly good turnout of ratepayers attended the annual meeting in the Council Chamber last Monday. Mayor Whinwster presided and reviewed the year's council business, presenting expenditure accounts under separate headings. No complaints were raised and a vote of thanks was given to officials for their conduct of town finances.
