Winter annuals like pepper grass germinate readily but winter over. late summer sow thistle and Canada thistle roots can be killed by very early tillage. Even thorough postharvest tillage cannot ensure permanent weed control, pushing farmers toward alternating fallow and grain rotation as cropping shifts toward grass and legume crops.
