Cutting alfalfa too late can affect spring growth

John Patterson explains alfalfa stores food in roots in fall for winter survival and spring regrowth. food reserves are lowest when plants reach 10 to 12 inches about three weeks after new growth begins, then increase as roots store surplus. Do not cut within five weeks before killing frost, typically after mid to late August. leaving tall stubble or unharvested strips can improve winter snow trapping and survival. Patterson is Manitoba Agriculture representative for Hamiota. reach him at 764-2767.
