A large crowd gathered at the old Maple Shade School site for a centennial reunion. Rev. V. Bowins led the dedication, with Lloyd Anderson as host, and former pupils unveiled a marker showing the former school’s dates in use.
Miss M. E. O'Neill of Hamio ta wins six firsts at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto for entries in ribbed plain and fancy men's socks tatted daily handkerchief knitted lace and knitted daily. She a retired postal employee competes nationally in Toronto Brandon Vancouver and locally.
The August ISABELLA meeting met Wednesday afternoon at Mrs Still's home with Mrs Still presiding. Roll Call cited a favorite wild flower and members displayed flower arrangements judged at meeting end. Awards included a silver trophy to Mrs. Coxworth and a lucky ticket draw won by Mrs. E. Martin.
Reggies Ramblings notes a witty retort about youth and tax collectors. A toast to Charlie Hawkins, publisher of the Menu Western Canadian, elected President of the Canadian Weekly Newspaper Association in a sentiment praising him as a worthy choice.
The annual Butler family gathering took place at the Fair Grounds in the afternoon with a day of visiting and activities. Stacey Crampaign aged 5 months was the youngest attendee, and Mrs. Jim Sparrow of Forrest aged 76 was the eldest.
A social hour at Mr Orville Murray’s home on Friday August 14 honored Luella Williamson and Kirby with corsage and boutonniere. Guests heard an address by Mrs Audrey Gurr and saw gifts from Isobel Kerr and Lyle Campbell. 23 former co workers signed the guest book as hostesses led contests and served lunch. Luella plans to move to Winnipeg after nine years at the local hospital.
Mrs G Hunter entertained guests at a Come and Go Tea on Sunday August 9 with Mrs Gordon Cosgrove overseeing the Trousseau room and Mrs Laura Witcher in charge of the guest book. Guests viewed gifts and enjoyed refreshments as several assistants helped.
Hamiota Red Sox move ahead 3 1 in the series by winning 5-3 with strong pitching. Morrison, Mel Smith, and Lynn Caldwell drive runs as Hamiota tallies in 4th and 6th innings. Ron Ramsey allows 4 hits with 4 walks, two out error by Bob Caldwell opens gates for Morrison home.
Ian Lowe leads the Manitoba Senior Baseball League host team in Brandon for the Canadian Senior Baseball championships with games at Brandon Hamiota and Souris. Events include a free Bob Feller clinic at Kinsmen Stadium on August 27, a kickoff dinner, a Sunday chicken barbecue, a large parade and a beer garden between innings.
A miscellaneous shower for Joyce Hunter, to be married September 5, was hosted at Decker Church Parlors. Guests included the bride’s mother Mrs H Hunter and relatives Mrs C Knight, Mrs H Knight Hamiota, and Mrs G Cosgrove, who were given corsages and seated by the committee. Joyce thanked guests, invited them to visit in Brandon, and a trousseau contest followed with a light lunch served.
Hamiota will co host the Canadian Senior Men's Baseball Championships August 28 30 at Brandon Souris and Hamiota with the Brandon Kinsmen Club organizing local arrangements. Volunteers are sought for booth shifts and parking duties as games schedule includes Friday matchups and Sunday noon and afternoon pairings with teams from Ontario Saskatchewan Prince Edward Island Manitoba and Quebec.
Bad weather during Fair Day forced postponement of the handmade covered wagon draw. Mrs. Charles Randell of Hamiota won the wagon, ticket drawn by Shelly Caldwell. Reg Teal donated the wagon. The raffle raised $108.50 to fund a 16mm movie projector for in service education. Thank you to supporters and staff.
