Mallard numbers drop in Manitoba despite good water

The Provincial Wildlife Branch reports Manitoba Mallard populations are below normal despite favorable prairie water conditions. Biologists note low reproduction with a 1 to 1 young to adult ratio, prompting calls to reduce kills and restrict hunting to females to boost brood production while studies continue.

Blacks celebrate golden anniversary in Hamiota

Mr and Mrs J D Black of Hamiota Manitoba observed their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on July 22 from 2 to 5 pm. The couple married January 2 1918 in Shoal Lake. Family and friends attended a gold and white themed event with speeches and gifts from grandchildren and relatives including messages from national and provincial leaders.

Birdtail River School Board Discusses Division Boundary Changes

Birdtail River School Division No. 38 held a regular meeting at Shoal Lake on August 1 1967. Trustees debated petitioning the Boundaries Commission to redraw division lines and consider establishing eastern and western school centres to ensure equal educational opportunities. The board scheduled adjournments for August 3 and August 10 to continue the discussion and prepare the Boundaries Commission brief.

Red Sox Clinch MBL pennant with 5 3 win over Cloverleafs

The Hamiota Red Sox secured first place in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League by beating Brandon 5 3. They stand 18 5 with one game left against St Lazare, while Spuris 15 8 Riverside 12 9 Brandon 12 12 St Lazare 9 12 Dauphin 9 14 and Virden 4 19 follow. Don Smith doubled, Robertson and Wright singles, and Gary Keating earned his seventh win. The playoffs likely start Tuesday with semis matching 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd. admission 75 cents.

Mrs. R. A. Cumming Enters Into Rest

Ella Jean Gould died suddenly on Sunday August 6. She was born May 13, 1897 in Ralphton now Kenton and married Robert A. Cumming October 10 1922. Survived by husband three sons Allan Melwyn Bruce and daughter Leila with 8 grandchildren and siblings. Funeral at Kenton United Church with Greenwood Cemetery burial.
