Grass harvest demands care
Growers of brome and creeping red fescue must take greater care in harvesting the seed crop says R I Pharis Supervisor of Crop Improvement Service. Many seed producers are straight combining much of their acreage. This practice makes seed of high moisture content the rule rather than the exception and there is danger of losing stored seed due to heating. Every effort should be made to harvest seed that is low in moisture content. If a grower plans to straight combine he should employ some means of drying the seed. Seed should be checked frequently immediately after combining as heating can occur in a very short time if material is high in moisture. Swathing and combining after drying in the swath involves less risk of loss through heating of threshed seed.
