Natural factors help Manitoba farmers check aphids
Manitoba Agriculture entomologist Jay McCullough says predators weather and a fungus cut aphid numbers this summer. Lady beetles lacewing larvae and syrphid fly larvae prey on aphids while heavy rains and a fungal disease reduce them. Farmers should sample at least 10 plants to gauge risk, and two aphid types on wheat share a 50 per head control threshold. Dimethoate and malathion remain recommended with preharvest intervals of 21 and 7 days. Aphids on canola are not yet a major chemical concern.
