Provincial Exhibition and Stampede Brings Rodeo to Brandon

Brandon Manitoba hosts the Provincial Exhibition and Stampede August 7 to 12 with a new rodeo purse of 2 500 and a 4 250 purse for driving events. Cowboys from Canada and the U S perform calf roping steer wrestling brahma bull riding bareback and saddle bronc riding. Evening grandstand shows include light and heavy horse events and the Travellers Day Parade opens August 7 at 1 30 p m. Children’s Day August 9 offers free admission for under 14. Grounds open 7:00 a m daily with gate prices one dollar and under fourteen fifty cents grandstand prices 1 75 and 1 25 for youths. Free parking.

Couple Honoured at Lavinia Social Evening

A Lavinia social evening at Mr. and Mrs. Glen Bridge celebrated the recent marriage of Leigh Cochrane. Hosts welcomed Diane to Lavinia and Elmer Johns presented an electric kettle and wall mirror from the community. North Group served a lunch to conclude the gathering.

Jim Scott Honoured in Oak River July 21

About 200 Blanshard residents filled the School Auditorium to honour Jim Scott, Ward 6 councillor 1947 1953 and Reeve 1953 1971. A scroll and purse of 106 were presented by Mrs Graeme Shaw. Corsage to Jean Scott and boutonniere to Jim. speeches by Stan Henry and others. lunch served by the municipality committee. Scott thanked attendees noting unity as strength.

Bowling Notes from Hamiota Visit and Strathclair Return

Winnipeg Bowling Association members visited Hamiota Lawn Bowling Club on July 24 for a talk and short game. Strathclair Bowling Club members returned July 31 for two bowling games and a social lunch.

Civic Holiday Baseball Tournament Draws Eight Teams

Eight top Manitoba and North Dakota teams will compete in Souris on Monday August 7 for $900 in prize money with $300 to the winner. Entries include Minor Merchants Binscarth Orioles Carman Goldeyes Souris Cardinals Riverside Canucks Neepawa Cubs and Manitoba Senior League all stars host team. Games run 10 am to 6:30 pm seven innings except final with four small-ball events also planned.

Seasons limits given for ducks and geese in Manitoba

Mines, Resources and Environmental Management Minister Sidney Green announces 1972 duck and goose seasons with unchanged bag limits and revised migratory bird zone boundaries. Eight ducks daily, 16 in possession. five mallards daily, 10 in possession. special limits for canvasback and redhead. Geese daily limit ten. Zone dates vary by region, with open coastlines and specific dates across zones one through four. Wildlife permits and licenses required for hunting waterfowl.

Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. McKinnon of Kenton called on Mrs. Butler last week. Arthur families from Victoria and Winnipeg visited relatives in Manitoba. visitors include Clarence Fraser and family from New Jersey and Bill Whitewell from Winnipes. Several birthdays and well wishes are noted along with travel between Winnipeg, Philip Arthur, Miniota, Birtle and other locations.

Puppet Troupe and Milk Truck Highlight Hamiota Kids Week

Hamiota schedules a Puppet Troupe visit on Monday at 1 30 pm and a Milk Truck appearance on Wednesday. Regular children’s activities run Tuesday through Friday and Saturdays at 1 30 pm. Archery and basketball for ages 12 plus occur Tuesday and Thursday evenings 7 30 to 9. A women’s bicycling tour is set for Monday at 7 30 pm.

Diamond Anniversary Celebrated in Hamiota

Relatives from five provinces and friends traveled from Hamiota to mark the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Jamieson. An Open House was held at Chumah Hall United Church. Telegrams from Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Trudeau greeted the couple, who married in 1912 and lived in Swan River before moving to Hamiota in 1935.

The construction program nears schedule with Hoffman Construction’s main crew relocating. Painting plumbing and electrical work continue as sub-trades finish their portions. An Open House is planned for this Fall to view the completed hospital.

Isabilla War Bride Celebrates 25th Anniversary Dinner

On Saturday July 15 1972 Anne and George Ariss hosted guests for a birthday supper that turned into a 25th anniversary celebration for George and Gerry Ariss. Guests from Isabella Manitoba Crandall and Decker joined, with Tom Stewart proposing a toast and Jeanine Harrison gifting an electric wall clock. Birthday cake from Hazel Rockley and a toast ended a memorable evening.
