Four western premiers in Yorkton issue a communique condemning federal overreach into provincial jurisdictions after the April 13 conference. They fault the April 10 budget for unilateral action, lack of prior consultation, and breach of February conference spirit while not disputing the sales tax cut itself.
The Universities Grants Commissions open meeting is postponed to May 18 at the request of Manitoba universities. W.J. Condo announced the event will begin at 2 p.m. at the International Inn Winnipeg with a May 8 deadline for briefs to R.W. Simpson. The public session will include a prepared agenda and allow brief presentations and questions.
Oak River Hamiota finishes the season with 26 wins 3 ties 6 losses. They take the Virden Tournament A side trophy with three wins and claim first in league playoffs after defeating Brandon 8 2 and 4 2 and then outlasting Minnedosa 4 3 and 4 1. Keith Lockhart presented a new Major Pee Wee plaque praised for sportsmanship.
The Scotia Ladies Club hosted its spring meeting at Maxine Cumming’s home with twelve members present on April 11. Officers installed included Grace Anderson as president and Maxine Cumming as treasurer. Committees were named and plans for a May bake sale and novice table were discussed.
The Chumah Ladies Club held a quilting bee at Dorothy Amy's on April 13 with sixteen members and one visitor present. After completing the quilt, a short business period followed and volunteers offered to take part in future efforts.
The May meeting discussed hospital donations to be sent May 10. Janelle presented the treasurer's report with Laura from Hospital Auxiliary. A motion to join Hamiota for Maureen Hazlewood’s June 24 community shower was passed. Plans to estimate costs for community birthday books were raised. Mizpah benediction closed the meeting and lunch was served by Group 1 hostesses.
Hamiota Band Booster group met on Thursday April 13 in Hamiota Collegiate with 17 members. They will prepare a Band Birthday Calendar for 1977 to fund a bus tour to Moose Jaw Band Festival May 19th to 21st and support a Trophy Awards Concert in Shoal Lake May 12th. The Division Band will perform at Birtle April 18 Neepawa April 27 Strathclair May 2. The Junior Band also performed at Strathclair and St Lazare. Next meeting is May 11th at 10 a.m.
