Manitoba reopens the Private Sector Youth Employment Program with a 2.8 million dollar initial funding aimed at creating about 5,000 extra jobs for youths aged 16 to 24. Employers may add up to three positions per location, each at least 240 hours with a 1.50 dollar per hour subsidy.
Clarion Petroleums Limited, a Calgary firm described as young but aggressive, will spend five million dollars over two years to drill at least 20 wildcat wells in Manitoba’s Virden area. The plan, announced in the Manitoba Legislature and Winnipeg, starts May 1, with 10 wells by November and 10 more in 1982, under a farm out deal granting drilling rights from Shell Canada on about 325 000 acres.
Highways minister Don Orchard announced a 10.4 mile four lane section of the Trans Canada Highway from Kemnay to Alexander west of Brandon will begin paving on June 1. Northeastern Construction Ltd. will complete the $1,747,005 project this fall as the first phase of a 48 mile plan to four-lane the Brandon to Virden stretch.
Manitoba Health minister warns owners of 1930s to 1940s dinnerware brands to dispose of or test items. Studies show orange glaze pieces from Fiestaware and others emit high radiation. Contact Manitoba Radiation Protection Branch to arrange testing and follow disposal via breaking and trash or burial.
Minister Bud Sherman urges claimants to file by April 30 for reimbursement of 1980 non drug costs under Pharmacare. Adults under 65 and families face a 75 dollar deductible. those 65 plus receive 80 percent beyond a 50 dollar deductible. About 92,000 1980 claims have been processed as of March 31.
The Birdtail River festival reports higher entries across instrumental, piano, and vocal sections. The event spans ten sessions over four days ending with a final concert beginning Monday May 4 with instrumental sessions, then piano on Tuesday, choirs and solos on Wednesday, and more choirs on Thursday. Programs are available at local stores.
