News notes from Hamburg cover the death of Presbyterian missionary Rev. B A Enders in India after a long illness. The report follows letters from his daughter Midiam and a cable from India. Local concerns mention street rowdyism, hotel disruption, and a buggy accident near Chas Theissen's farm. Other items note a Hamburg visit by Mrs Lola Covington nee Simons, courthouse adjournment, and school staff appointments for the coming year.
A superb company presents Harold McGrath’s The Man on the Box at Haroturg Saturday September 3. The revival, dramatized by Grace Livingstone Euraiss, ran over two hundred New York nights and remains a vivid blend of strong human drama and sparkling comedy. The play will be accurately staged and costumed, closely following the book for an evening of rare entertainment.
The Ladies of Mt Olive Sunday school invite the community to a box supper at the home of James W. Brown two miles east of Hourg on Thursday evening September 8. Boxes cost 28 cents.
Dr C Andrew, once practicing in Brownville and Auburn, died by his own action in Kansas City last Thursday evening. Carbolic acid poisoning cited. envelope printing remark appears in the report.
Through the kindness of clerk Harrison the Reporter has a bat pocket of the District court for the August term which began last Tuesday. It is presided over by Judge Wheeler with Reporter Brewington, county attorney Norent, clerk Harrison, sheriff Harris and deputy Adams. The printing was done in the Tator Leacon office and is a neat and good piece of work. It shows twelve practicing attorneys in the county. Three are in Haifiurg, seven in Sidney, one in River ton, and one in Randolph. It shows sixteen criminal pages, seven indictments from previous terms, five bound over to this term, and four oral appeals from lower courts. Eleven defendants charged with felonies reside in or near Hamburg. It shows seventy civil cases, thirty continued from last term and forty begun since April. Twenty five civil cases are by the court without a jury, and thirteen appear as divorce cases, all but two begun by persons residing in or west Hamburg as plaintiffs or defendants. Three cases are against the G B and Q railroad company, one for damages from Charley Singleton’s death near Ottumwa Lowe, one by John Horsly of Parcival and one by T A Chambers. Much evidence of honest differences as to right and downright dishonesty will be developed before these cases are tried.
Will Leggitt and wife welcomed a baby boy named Fred Siow in Fort Collins Colorado. Charley Sayers and wife also had a son. Ernest Askey and wife added a bouncing boy. The births occurred Monday and Wednesday, labeled as progressive by the article.
Hamburg witnesses a major banking change as Farmers National Bank merges into Farmers Savings Bank. The new institution consolidates 350,000 paid in capital and vast resources from First National Bank of Council Bluffs and others, backed by Council Bluffs and Sioux City banks. Ernest E. Hart presides, with Andrew Hydinger as vice president, and local directors include W. E. Mitchell and J. Greenshields among others. The bank pledges strong, compliant operation under Iowa law with millions in resources.
Stephens who was nominated for county attorney on the Republican ticket resigns his place and plans to emigrate to Colorado soon. He says he regrets the decision and the central committee will be compelled to fill the vacancy.
Karl Wyatt of Knox was arrested in Omaha early this week by Sheriff T C Harris on a wife desertion charge. He had married Stella Kephart near Tabor about four weeks earlier at the county jail, but left shortly after the ceremony and returned to Tabor. He was discharged on further hearing.
Manford Lin ville reported melons worth about 310 stolen from his patch. He shot at three young men, two Hubbell sons and Arthur Sage, as they fled in a swaying buggy. One boy’s leg hung from the buggy. the buggy bed was damaged. The Hubbell youths Timor and Thomas were arrested and jailed for six days.
Captain Hiram Atkinson returned to his home in Thurman after several months at the state soldiers' home. Accompanied by his wife who went to Marshalltown to bring him back, many friends in Fremgot county regret that he remains in very feeble health.
The community mourns Freake Brainerd Hed a Hamburg High School pupil aged sixteen who died Sunday afternoon from appendicitis after illness. Funeral services were held at his parents home northeast of town conducted by Rev. Mr Brower. He was well liked and leaves grieving family and friends. Interment followed Tuesday at Hamburg cemetery.
The Public Schools of Hamburg will open Tuesday morning Sept 6 to enroll students. The superintendent will be in his office Friday afternoon, all day Saturday, and Monday to confer with prospective enrollees. Mr Haydin can be seen at school or home on Blu Street. A teachers’ cheering gathering is set for Saturday at two o’clock to organize the year’s work.
The piece recalls chaotic scenes in Hamburg last Saturday with unruly conduct and old town memories of saloons and barrooms. It notes a sense of uncivilized behavior and references long-time residents Percy and Mrs Slack of Colorado who plan to remain there after leaving Nebraska City.

A Friday morning blaze at Hinze's implement store damaged the frame building and four adjoining structures storing tools and equipment. The fire started in an automobile shed, likely ignited by a gasoline tank from a battery explosion, awakening nearby residents and prompting a rapid response by firefighters. The automobile was ruined for scrap, water damage affected adjacent buildings, but insurer Hinze is covered, leaving owners Myers Overlay Swanson and others with no major loss.
Henry Baker plans a permanent move from his native state to Corrine Utah. The report notes he will miss old acquaintances and familiar sights while the Reporter will keep readers updated on his progress. The family hopes the new location proves agreeable and pleasant.
The cemetery association will soon hold a rummage sale. All members are requested to be prepared for it when the notice of time and place is given.
