Lightning Kills Horses and Injures Men Near Payne Farms
A Wednesday storm sparked a fatal bolt that struck near Payne farms northwest of the city, killing five horses in a wagon team and badly injuring Rae Crumb and his son James while attempting to move a plow and carriages. Mr Crumb and James escaped serious harm, while a boy lying in the wagon seat died of injuries. The middle horse of each team died, and the others were badly harmed. Crumb’s actions saved his son as fire, shattered clothing, and torn footwear marked the tragedy. The Hamburg Canning Company named S M Nesdixs as plant manager, succeeding his late father.
