Senator Bass Reports Senate Progress and Redistricting
In the Senate this week the pace quickens as funding spending and redistricting dominate. Bass notes Fremont and Page Counties will be dropped from his district while rural Pottawattomie and five Adams County townships are added. A Conference Committee report on school funding, HLF 654, would raise some taxes while keeping state spending in check. Senate action includes SF 5 creating a Department of Environmental Quality to combat pollution and a bill requiring flashing lights on slow moving vehicles after June 30 1972, limited to new tractors. The session could end around June 11 or 12 with much still to do.

In defense of legislators An editorial in defense of legislators
The piece argues legislators face heavy pressures from committees and interest groups as they tackle big issues and budgets. It stresses state and local impact, the need to balance funds, taxes, and shifting blame away from lawmakers who strive to do the right thing amid competing district interests.
