Hamburg Public Schools History of Rambure paper

A fragmentary history recounts Hamburg Public Schools origins from 1870s riverfront log classrooms to brick buildings. It lists early teachers like Miss Van Eaten, Prof Beard, Hattie Hooper, Lura Alexander, notes on ward schools, site selection led by W. A. Stowe, and a costly 1876 three story building later damaged by fires in 1888 and 1890.

Local Fishermen Accused of Dynamite Fishing

Neighbors report parties in the area use dynamite to kill fish for the Nisha. The destructive practice harms all fish, especially the small ones, and violates the law. Strong penalties urged to curb the activity.

Relocation of M A Travis Family to Modale Iowa

The Travis family moves their tougebald goods to Modale Iowa this week to establish a future home and business. Ilamburg residents regret the departure of a 30 strong influence for good and hope the family finds a congenial location and success in residence and commerce. Harvey, a Cut Rate store employee and recent graduate, will remain in the city for a time. Tebor college plans its Forty-fifth Annual Commencement from June 4 to June 5 with five girls and three boys earning A B degrees, two conservatory music graduates, and others from the academy and commercial department. The faculty and trustees invite all interested in education to attend.

Riverton eighth graders visit Lorimer’s studio

A Riverton group of five boys and five girls from the eighth grade visited Saturday. Messrs King and Cowdes supervised as the public school colors pk and yellow were displayed. Chaperons enjoyed the outing and invited the youths to return for longer visits.

Burlington officials Reve Vara Mahler and J A Chesginger from Creston joined a private train tour inspection Friday. They switched at EB Street and dined at the Julien during the visit.

John Cooper Dies After Long Life With Cooper Family

John Cooper aged ninety years eleven months and thirteen days died Friday in Pridey. He and his life partner had long been together. Funeral services were held at Mt Zion Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev A W Tandy, with burial in Mt Zion cemetery by the Masons.

Mrs Ives Dies After Sudden Illness In Hamburg

Mrs Ives born August 18 1847 in Bangor Maine died suddenly last week. She married J C Tes in 1868 and moved with their five children to Hamburg in 1870 where her husband had died earlier. Funeral services were held Sunday morning at the Argyle street residence conducted by Rev G A Marshall and burial followed in Hamburg cemetery.

Game Called Off In Storm At Farragut

Hamburgs ball team traveled to Farragut Tuesday but weather forced the game from the diamond in the second inning. The storm kept the players in Farragut overnight and locals provided free entertainment and paid expenses. Hamburg praised Farragut and promised to repay the kindness when possible.

Mann Family Business Change Sees Sturgeon Take Over Hamburg Yard

A. H. Mann, long running a coal and feed yard on Main Street between A and D streets, has sold the venture to C. W. Sturgeon. Mann receives a farm in Atchison County in exchange. It is hoped he may remain in Hamburg as a citizen and continue in business in some capacity.

Wheel comes off buggy in near miss to cemetery

Mrs Winnie Bailey and her young son were driving to the cemetery when a buggy wheel detached sending one cargo off the seat. The horse did not bolt and no injuries were reported in this near accident.
