A mail pouch was stolen from the depot before midnight Saturday night and found torn on a freight car Monday. Conductor and local postal officials investigate with little information. A Council Bluffs youth was seen near the depot. the sack was taken from near the office door while the dispatcher was away. The pouch contained a few letters and a parcel post package, no registered mail.
The death notices report Earl Smith born March 3 1890 died January 29 1921 in Riverton aged 30 years 10 months and 27 days with funeral held at home conducted by Rev Calkins and Masons. John Conyear aged 66 died after long illness at home on Park Street Hamburg with funeral at Methodist church and burial in Hamburg cemetery. survivors include wife Fanny Cox two daughters Mrs Frank Brown and Mrs Maude Lane.

Mrs Sarah A Lunt aged 93 died Monday evening at her daughter’s home on Argyle street Hamburg. Born March 27 1827 in Brunswick Maine she lived as Hamburg’s oldest resident until her death. She married Daniel Lunt of Tunbridge Vermont and had four children Horace Lunt of Chicago Lillian Toedt and two granddaughters Flora Riedy and Sara Toedt. Funeral was private at the Argyle street home Wednesday morning.
The Kidd Mercantile in Riverton and the Graham Mo store were sold to H Roy Tull and associates of Craig Missouri for 125000. George E Harris formerly owned the Model Store in Riverton handled the deal. The Kidd brothers receive two farms near Pattensburg and Chilhowee Mo and will devote time to their extensive farm holdings.
Chet Boyd, aiding his father on the farm, was pitched from a hay wagon when it hit a gate post. He landed on the hard ground, injuring his leg and rendering him unable to walk.
A birthday reception was held at Mrs. Bertha Davis’s home in Hamburg on Monday evening for Lawrence Baker’s twenty sixth birthday. Guests enjoyed games and an oyster supper after which Emma Werner Ada Baker Olive Baker Lawrence Baker Francis Bassitt and Glen Coffey were shown as attendees. Arch Campbell and Fred Bangs Farragut residents traveled through Hamburg Tuesday en route to Omaha for personal and business reasons connected with Campbell & Sons hardware store.
The Reporter notes a strong slate of farm and stock sales in coming weeks despite a softer market. Mrs Ed Lockett near Payne starts Feb 9 selling stock and farming gear as she retires. O Van Meter near Hamburg follows Feb 11 with stock and implements and plans to move to St Joe to join the commission trade.
A dream story from near Onawa Iowa describes H F Jessen a farmer who dreamed his wife and children mangled under an overturned car. He awoke unable to speak and later became permanently deaf with hair turned white as a train narrowly avoided striking their stalled vehicle on a Northwestern track.
John Finnell Jr. offers seven Betsy 3rd daughters in his bred sow hog sale at Hamburg on Wednesday February 16. Betsy 3rd, a famed Hampshire foundation dam, anchors a rare entry of seven daughters in the ring.
The Minnewaska club and their husbands were entertained at the Forsyth home with a picnic supper and games. Guests then attended a Colonial Theatre showing hosted by Howard Colon, the theatre manager.
Patrons protest the 18 cent rate after meters were read just before January. They demand a bill for the extra week at the old rate and a receipt for the overcharge. The case will be heard this term of court.
Ed Kellison fractured his wrist while cranking a car on Saturday. The injury was painful and will keep him out of action for a period.
Harold B. Porterfield and Miss Lucille Meidins ey wed in Essex, officiated by the groom’s father. The couple plan to home in Hamburg once a house is located. The bride, from Lincoln, is a state university alumna and highly regarded. The groom, now practicing law with his father, recently graduated top of a class at Lincoln. Well wished by friends for happiness and success.
The American Legion minstrel returns with two shows at 7 and 9 30 tonight at the Colonial Theatre. Expect full houses after last time's strong turnout with new faces and updated material. Proceeds support the American Legion. admission remains 25 cents for children and 50 cents for adults.
Bert Douglas arrived at the Reporter office Saturday carrying two large packages. He explained he had just butchered a fine hog and, with his wife, wished to present the Reporter with a gift. The gesture was received with gratitude and reflected the couple’s longstanding friendly spirit.
Miss Frances Hickman turned ten on Saturday and hosted a party for her young friends with games and dainty refreshments. Dan Richards of Kellogg, Iowa, visited the Chase Clayton home south of town part of the week, en route to Oklahoma to visit former neighbors.
The public library reopened after a two week closure for cleaning and re cataloging. Miss Leatha Davidson led staff with Miss Clara Abernethy assisting from Des Moines at the state Library commission. The city schools library was added, main room layout updated, the adult section moved to the north wing and west side, and the children’s department expanded from the school addition. Wall cases were added in the basement assembly room for duplicates and overflow as the library seeks more books for children and support from the board to fund several hundred dollars worth of new volumes. Saturday and Monday set loan records with 102 and 118 books borrowed respectively.
Mrs. John Hale departed Monday for a visit in the east primarily to the home of her daughter and husband Captain and Mrs Jack Patterson at Camp Mead near Baltimore. She will first go to Washington DC then to other points before Camp Mead. Her stay duration is unsure. Meanwhile John Hale will stay with his son Everett and wife in Fairbury Nebraska during her absence.
Widow Myrtle Uickman as administrator of the Hickman estate sues C B & RE R Co Western Union Telegraph Co and Nebraska City Light & Power Co in a Lincoln Nebraska federal court for 30000 damages. The petition alleges negligence in wiring that allowed high voltage lines to touch telegraph wires causing R B E Hickman to be electrocuted while working as an operator at Payne Iowa in March 1920.
Herb Shelton lost his Ford coupe by fire last Thursday near the Connor Brothers store and the depot. He had just returned from a trip, parked the car, and entered the store when bystanders spotted the blaze and alerted him. The auto was damaged beyond repair and insured for $800 with Mid-West Auto Insurance of Cherokee Iowa. D L Hollub, superintendent of agencies, settled for the full face of the policy.
