Mob Hangs Negro in Annapolis Jail Lynching Report
A mob of about 235 men broke into the Annapolis jail at dawn and hanged Henry Davis, also called Chambers, after he confessed to assaulting Mrs. Reid near Iglehams Station. Officers offered little resistance as the prisoner was dragged to a vacant lot by College Creek and executed with bullets. A coroner’s jury returned a verdict of death at the hands of persons unknown. The lynching appeared organized from St John’s College grounds, with Senior hall used as gathering point, though college officials denied student involvement. The mob paused at the gas plant en route, attempting to gain entry and dim lights.
