Preventing Apricot Frost Losses in Leeton District
Apricot trees in the Leeton New South Wales district will receive plant hormone injections to delay flowering for three to four weeks. About 90,000 trees will be treated over the coming months at the Leeton cannery’s request after last year’s frost wiped out 40,000 tons. American plant breeder George Warner, visiting Australia at the invitation of the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, will assist, including experiments to frostproof 15 apricot trees, speed up crops by three weeks, and treat 3500 tomato plants to boost yield by 20 to 40 percent and advance harvest by three weeks. If successful, 800,000 tomato plants may be treated in a year. other prospects include tung oil, pecan, and macadamia nuts. Hormones in growing plants enable precise control of growth.
