Migration scheme seeks five thousand farm labour migrants
The Commonwealth Government plans to bring up to five thousand migrants with rural farming experience to Australia under deals with the Dutch and Italian governments. About five hundred migrants have already arrived and are doing fruit, pickling, and other farm work in the Murray region. The program aims to allocate labour to primary producers ahead of metropolitan employers and arrange hostels, holding centres, and weekend accommodation in country hotels, with district officers coordinating farmer interviews and dates.
