Postmaster Leo N Gledhill reports a Christmas Day mail halt with no city village or rural delivery. Only special letters parcels and handling mail reach recipients. some staff stay for first class dispatch to trains. Newspapers schools theatres and chambers urged to publicize and encourage early mailing.
Hyrum Domgaard, bound for Norway to serve as a Mormon missionary, was honored last Saturday by the Clarion ward. A large crowd attended an entertaining event where he received a substantial purse and best wishes for a happy sojourn abroad.
Local residents and guests share social visits and family gatherings. Notable items include funeral attendance for Wrastus Durfee of Aurora, Thanksgiving visits by Laura Morley, and community events with Ruel Nielsen and other families.ngoing business includes loading 4000 tons of beer at the Axtell dump and various Ephraim and Idaho connections.
Parents of the city and school faculty will meet at the Relief Society hall next Wednesday at 7 30 p m to form a Parent-Teachers organization. The gathering aims to boost school interest, improve training for children, and foster citizen involvement through a state-supported program. A program includes student musical selections recitations and talks on cooperation and school problems led by Joseph Christenson and Arthur Larson.
University of Utah reports record fall term enrollment with 2 611 students from Utah and across the nation and eight foreign countries. Expect 2 900 by spring. Idaho and California provide the largest state contingents, followed by Montana Wyoming Colorado and Arizona. Foreign students include the Philippines Russia Japan India Hawaii Canada France and China. Rhoda Jensen is among the student body.
Miss Mary Fredricksen the 17 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Andrew V Fredricksen of Centerfield was taken to Salina hospital Monday morning by Dr J A Hagan and Tuesday she underwent an appendectomy. The operation was highly successful and she is recovering splendidly with no complications and good chances for a speedy recovery. Mr and Mrs Fredricksen were with their daughter during the operation.
Mr and Mrs Clifton Edwards announce the birth of a baby daughter at their home following a Payson hospital birth last Sunday. The family and newborn are reported doing well. Mr and Mrs H S Carlisle of Salina visited Gunnison Sunday evening.
Utah's eighth annual Christmas Seal Sale opens today and runs to Christmas Eve under the Utah Public Health Association. The campaign educates on disease prevention with nurses, clinics, lectures, and materials while urging dollar contributions to fund awareness and reduce TB deaths in the state.
Ross Palmer, longtime Gunnison resident, moved to Price at the start of the week to establish a soft drink parlor in Carbon County. He plans to begin business about December first, while Mrs. Palmer will stay for the winter and join him in spring.
Thursday last Mrs Arthur Johnson hosted guests including Mrs Alfred Fjeldsted and Mrs Oscar Hasmussen of Price for a six o clock dinner assisted by Miss Elna Fieldstern. The double funeral of Mr and Mrs Andrew Fieldster brought Mrs Oscar Rasmussen, formerly Evelyn Caldwell, to town. Will Gribble's family dinner honored Mr and Mrs Paul Kim Nol with twelve at table. Dr and Mrs T M Aldous visited Codon for Thanksgiving with his parents and planned to attend the Utah Utes vs Utah Agricultural College football game.
The Gunnison Valley Alfalfa Meal mill began operation this week after extensive overhauls by expert mechanics. It now grounds about 48 tons of alfalfa every ten hours, with Mr. Delmue from Salt Lake praising the results. The plant feeds sheep at local stations, boosting stock quality and prices as 17,000 head are currently under feeding and next year plans call for 60,000 to 75,000 more.
Statewide interest centers on a Utah Taxpayers Association convention with the General Committee and county representatives from across Utah to discuss tax policy. Chairman Henry H. Rolapp says every county has a tax organization and each town its spokesman to ensure broad taxpayer input.
Gunnison woke to a store robbery at Max Cohen's with losses near 3000. A night watchman saw no prowlers and noted one or two suspicious strangers. Entry was gained through a rear door as thieves fled toward an unknown auto west of the store.
Mrs J W Jones was hostess Tuesday evening of last week at a birthday anniversary party for Mr Jones. The home was decorated with grasses and blue flowers and favors were kewpie dolls in blue dresses. A seven thirty dinner was served for about twenty guests. Mah jong and solo provided entertainment until midnight. Honors at mah jong went to Mrs Julius Dugpine and Mrs J A Sayean.
Adilis Kelley secretary for Central A. & Swine company and R. 4H. Haines visited in the valley early this week gathering purebred Chester White hogs from local breeders. Several truckloads were shipped to Utah Nevada and Indiana for breeding use. Local buyers report strong satisfaction with recent purchases and plan to expand the industry as a permanent venture.
