The Supreme Court ruled the railroad pension act beyond Congress power, signaling a potential wave against social security legislation. Observers note the decision limits use of interstate commerce authority for social ends and could push reforms under taxation powers.
A Salt Lake City sociologist’s thesis reviews Utah old-age pensions showing 34 Sanpete residents 65 plus receive pensions in 1994 with 190 more on non pension relief. It notes 6487 elderly statewide rely on aid, only 968 receive pensions, and calls for a state-wide mandatory pension law.
Gunnison opens season with an 8 to 7 victory over Ephraim as Bert Eggertsen enters as pinch hitter and Rellis Sorenson follows with a three base hit driving in two runs. Ephraim led late but Gunnison surged to win in a dramatic eighth inning.
Final results announced for the 1935-36 student body officers with Dorothy Buchanan as president and Kenneth Roper as vice president. Vera Nielson is secretary treasurer, Mary Kimura reporter. Two candidates are named per office for June 12 elections including Bert Eggertsen and N L Hermansen for president, Payton Alexander and Leo B D Bardsley for secretary treasurer, and P M Sorenson and Russell Anderson for lion tamer. New board candidates include Mayor Andrew Modeen and others. The club plans to entertain sons of members at the election event with special features for guests.
The Associated Wool industries and Southern Utah flock masters lead a cooperative drive to boost wool consumption. They urge women in wool households to promote wool year round, wear wool, demand wool fabrics, and persuade men to wear wool. The effort aims to lift sales and benefit wool growing regions nationwide.
Brigham Young University professor T Earl Pardee urged graduates to consider national troubles and rural versus urban poverty as Gunnison Valley High School awarded diplomas to 39 students in a Commencement marked by music, speeches, and a post ceremony dancing party.
Mr and Mrs W L McIntyre operators of the Gunnison Drug company left Tuesday for a month long vacation. They begin with Decoration Day in Twin Falls Idaho then drive to Portland and Port Townsend visiting friends and relatives. Their return includes San Francisco and other coastal cities.
Antone Villard of Occidental College Los Angeles was chosen as one of six junior class members to join the D. C. club at tapping ceremonies. Selection honored for scholarship activity leadership and character. Villard active in Psi Delta Chi baseball football and the 0 club and serves as treasurer of his fraternity.
Calvert Mellor 18 son of Mr and Mrs Leon Mellor of Fayette was treated by Dr Hagan Tuesday morning for a badly injured foot after the horse he rode stumbled and fell. The accident occurred while he was guiding a herd of cattle to pasture and he was brought to Gunnison for treatment after the mishap.
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Peterson and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pardew were Salt Lake visitors this week.
