Anenut the widespread alfalfa weevil in Gunnison Valley prompts a county effort led by W. M. Allred urging proper control timing. Pasturing, mowing, digging and especially spraying are discussed, with a call for cooperative water management and proper equipment details to maximize effectiveness.
Six leading Axtell district farmers ordered a weevil spray demonstrated at Certerfield by Logan experimental station representatives. The apparatus will arrive by express and be put into operation immediately. Several travelers noted in Utah County report the spray eradicates the pest well, prompting an order by wire. Beer Stock Shipped. A carload of extra fine butcher stock including cattle sheep and hops was shipped from here last Saturday from Daunt Sanders herd to a Salt Lake firm.
J W Jones was summoned to Kalispell Montana last week due to his mother's death and returned to Gunnison Monday night. His wife Mrs Jones accompanied him to Salt Lake where she underwent a minor operation last Wednesday. She was hospitalized but relatives report she is recovering well and will soon return to Gunnison.
The greatest gathering of farmers ever held in Utah is advertised for June 3 and 4 at Liberty Park Salt Lake City. The event aims to unite farmers to cooperate organize and prosper with noted American farm leaders scheduled to speak. Gunnison Valley farmers plan to attend.
A carload of Ford automobiles consigned to Casino Motor Co. arrived last Thursday after twenty two days on the road from Kansas City. The vehicles were locked in a box car en route and held up but the entire shipment sold within two days. Local agents announce another car will be here by June 1.
The County Agent Lowry Nelson of Manti Utah offers to answer questions and describe the kind and size of pump equipment needed. He will assist in any way possible and notes a general description of pump equipment will be available to the Farm Bureau Committee in a few days or by the time this letter is printed.
Niels Sorenson, a prominent Gunnison citizen, died at 72 after a stroke and heat illness. His life spanned farming, irrigation leadership, and public service including county commissioner and state legislator. A Sunday funeral honored his memory as Gunnison mourned. The old Co op store, built in 1871, burned Monday night, blamed on a dumped cigarette. Insurance covered about 1900. owner Dennis Beauregard may rebuild a modern structure on the site.
Marion Hendrickson son of J H Erickson returned to Gunnison last Saturday night after service with expeditary forces in France. He had been abroad and was detained in a Boston government hospital for a month due to illness before coming home.
Mrs. Conrad Frischknnecht hosted the high school faculty for a Saturday luncheon with seven covers and a delightful time. Miss Ruth Friec knecht of Mant! attended among the guests. Amer Peterson, a Richfield resident for two years, has returned to Gunnison and will reside here permanently, taking a position with the Gunnison Motor company.
The service paid tribute to Prof J J McClellan with musical selections by Puneral March and Violin Solo pieces, followed by an address and benediction. The casket was adorned with floral offerings as mourners from Salt Lake City and local friends gathered for interment at Gunnison cemetery. pallbearers listed include W H Gribble Oscar Berglund J A Taft Anthony Madsen M Beauregard and William Metcalf.
Relatives of Hezekiah Duffin formerly of Gunnison and recently of Saroka report his death at home last Sunday night from pneumonia followed by tallivensa. He was nearly 50, left a widow and eight children, and is survived by a brother J W Duffin and three sisters Mrs Embley Mrs Bardsley and Mrs Joseph Bardsley.
Over the past fifteen days the valley reports eight newcomers. Dr Magan lists six boys and two girls born in homes of Clinton Christensen Mayfield W Jensen Centerfield Andrew Allred Centerfield Carlos Bierrgerrd Axtell A Willardson Mayfield Samuel Pierce Gunnison Clance Blyatt Gunnison.
The High School of Gunnison showcased an applied arts exhibition Friday afternoon in the Domestic Science room. Visitors praised the students for their furniture garments and fancy work on display.
Mrs. J. W. Edwards hosted a dinner Thursday of last week in honor of her daughter Miss Leona Edwards birthday. Twelve guests were served at the anniversary gathering with toasts and warm wishes.
Daunt Sanders and June Metcalf traveled to Salt Lake City last Monday and spent several days in the capital city for a mix of business and pleasure.
A forty man crew works across departments as major factory work nears completion. Beets look set for a bumper crop and be ready for harvest this fall. Pipe and sewer lines from Gunnison canal to the plant are finished. Manager Hinze says next Saturday will bring full beet thinning work with many local workers and visitors from Salt Lake City joining.
A splendid performance of The Heart of Humanity at the Casino theatre drew enthusiastic audiences Monday and Tuesday. Miss Dorothy Phillips, supported by a strong company, won hearts and the war drama was praised for its realism.
