A prominent citizen denounces pedestrians on the state highway for walking and bicycling, urging strict enforcement of laws against loitering on highways. He warns of accidents and fatalities and calls for parental responsibility and city and state action to protect vehicular traffic and lives.
Deseret Gymnasium in Salt Lake City hosts a May 24 to 27 life saving and first aid training school led by LE B Palmer, Pacific Branch Red Cross. George Hugtiling, Charles Welch, Pearl Cummock, and Harpest Hollings assist, with sessions 7 to 10 PM nightly for instructors, guards, and enthusiasts.
Lavar Voorhees and his family left Gunnison for Grace Idaho two weeks ago to consider making Gem State residence. He returned citing better prospects in Utah while praising Grace residents. The Voorhees stayed with Mr and Mrs D R Jensen in Grace during their visit.
Tomorrow Friday May 14 marks M I A day across the valley with farmers closing wells and stores and all joining in a community celebration at Gunnison Valley high school. The day features a morning program at 10 30 with singing speaking storytelling and folk dancing plus an afternoon of athletic events for men and women capped by a 2 30 track and field meet and a concluding dancing party with the Footwarmers.
Fred H. Jones local manager of the J C Penny store returned home yesterday after two weeks in Salt Lake City for a spring convention of western managers. About 100 managers and New York executives attended. Business sessions at Hotel Utah included addresses. Banquet followed, with fall winter supply orders placed by buyers from all departments.
Mrs. G. G. Light and her son Gerald traveled from Gunnison after attending the funeral of BR. W. Edwards. They were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Edwards who plan to settle on the coast. The party will visit Los Angeles before driving to San Francisco, Mrs. Light's home.
More than 300 people including students adults and children gathered at City hall last month for diphtheria inoculations. Over 800 were treated by Drs Hagen and Alilous with assistance from Mesdames Peery Dugeins and Metcalf. The effort aims for three applications with a May 15 follow up.
Mrs. Joseph Jensen hosted a birthday dinner with Jensen relatives and Salina guests. Mrs. Carl E. Nielsen honored by the Asxtel Relief Society with a linen tablecloth gift. Miss Alice Jensen and Grace visited Magna relatives. Una Nielsen graduated Snow Normal College, celebrated by family. Elvena Sorenson earned a Snow Normal College scholarship. Morley family from McGill Nevada visited Axtel. ten day trip planned with relatives.
Mayfield residents enjoyed a splendid pageant staged by the Gunnison Stake Relief Society at Mayfield school. Elaborate costumes, scenery, and chorus enchanted attendees and showcased the society’s intellectual and educational work. A large crowd praised the production with plans to bring it to Gunnison, where a future date will be announced. Attendees included Mayor Parley Christiansen and several local families.
W. L. Howell, a valued News office employee for three months, and Mrs. Howell have moved to Milford where he accepted a job with Karl Carlton. Bill was well liked in Gunnison and many friends wish him success in his new field.
Mrs Hyrum Christiansen hosted a birthday anniversary party at her home on Wednesday evening with carnations and roses in profusion. Guests enjoyed music and games before a luncheon at 10:30 p m with twenty four covers. Out of town guests included Mr and Mrs Bert Willardson of Salt Lake.
Visiting guests Mr and Mrs Bert Willardson were honored at a dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs Jane Metcalf in Gunnison last Saturday evening. Crystal bowls of car nations and bridal wreaths decorated the table. A chicken dinner was served at six o clock with ten covers set.
Friends in Naveia. Bishop and Mrs Royal Whitlock and Mr and Mrs George Whitlock spent Mother's Day at Mayfield. Mr and Mrs J C Peterson were Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Ruel B Nielsen. Mrs Leland Simpers nee Miss Alta Bijferwaard is canvulsing at Salina Hospital with her new daughter. The little Miss arrived Saturday May 8th. Both Mrs Simpers and baby are getting along nicely.
A 17 year old boy confessed to forging names and passing worthless checks to 36 to 10 dollars. Sheriff Sanderson and Deputy Carlson arrested him after victims A H Jensen and A H Peterson reported forgeries. He was sent to the state industrial school in Ogden after a juvenile court hearing.
Mrs. Sylvia Caldwell hosted a grandmother and a great grandmother gathering at her Axtell home. Special guests included Kristy Jorgensen 80 Alice Jorgensen 59 Lena Thompson 78 Harriett Higham 82 Sylvia Metcalf 80 with about twenty five guests enjoying a chicken dinner. The event stood out as one of the season's best parties in AxTell.
Cr G Leonis a noted sugar expert from Salt Lake appointed chief chemist for the Gunnison Sugar company for the coming campaign. He has worked with Utah Idaho Sugar and Canada beet fields and will relocate his family to Gunnison. He is a native of France and earned a chemical engineering degree.
The Gunnison Lions Club named candidates for officers at a regular luncheon in the Gunnison hotel. Nominations include Ira Overfelt for president with the second highest vote to be vice president, Leo D. Gledhill and Julius Duggins for secretary treasurer, Dr. S. S. Kunz and Linn H. Johnson for lion tamer, and Lento Rosenwall and Fred H. Jones for tail twister. Four directors will be elected. election is set for May 26. A report on the Ogden district convention and a $28.05 special round trip rate to the San Francisco International Lions convention in July were announced.
No Sunday services as Misses Curtis and McMonigal of the Presbyterian church attend the dedication of the new Presbyterian chapel at Cedar City next Sunday, so the regular Sunday school sessions here will be dispensed with.
The 1925 26 school health report by health nurse Mrs G D Peery shows 1814 children examined with 714 defects found and 1100 minor or no ailments. Parent cooperation shines as corrections will be made over summer and O K teeth campaign boosted attendance.
W C Cluff sales manager and Adrian Doc Jensen sales representative for the Telluride Power Company promote electric products during the early days, reporting splendid business while in the city.
Mr and Mrs John Anderson entertained at a formal dinner party last Sunday evening. Guests included Mr and Mrs Stephen Covey Mr and Mrs Parley Christiansen Bishop and Mrs Leslie Kidman Mr and Mrs D Michaelson Mr and Mrs Chas Rasmussen and Mr and Mrs J Ey.
