Economic overview notes federal processing and income taxes fund agricultural programs. It cites $760 million in income taxes and $792 million in processing taxes over 21 months, largely paid by housewives through higher bread and food prices. Payments to farmers reward non production, fueling a national debate over welfare and crop control.
Farmers will learn details of a proposed wheat adjustment program for 1986 to 1989 at final community meetings across wheat counties before the May 25 vote. Gunnison Valley schools prepare for final exams and closing exercises for the 1944-45 term. At the high school thirty seven graduates are announced with ceremonies on May 27 and a dancing party on May 28 in the building. Camille Rosenvall is named valedictorian and Principal Leo D. Bardsley lists the prospective graduates including Donis Allred and Jay Roper among others.
Six applicants for graduation at the Gunnison stake seminary were announced by Clayton Watts principal. The graduates are Dean Anderson Maylind Bard sley Dorothy Borg Leon Embley Tever Despain and Tral Despain. The ceremony will start at 8 o clock p m Thursday May 16 at the Gunnison ward chapel with a program including an invocation welcome address by Dean Anderson a high school band performance by Leon Embley student talks on seminary value and a diploma awards segment led by stake president Dr Carl F Eyring.
Mr and Mrs A M Peterson depart Gunns for a two week plus trip to Chicago Detroit Niagara Falls Washington DC and Massachusetts. They will buy a new Chrysler after visiting the Windy City and later return by bus to Salt Lake City for their vacation from Wistaria cafe duties.
The Gunnison ward chapel hosted a Daughters of the Utah Pioneers program Monday afternoon. Talks on pioneer days and a well received boys chorus from the Washington public school directed by Miss Cox featured the event, followed by ice cream and cookies.

The Gunnison Sugar Company announces a 50 cent per ton bonus for 1934 beet deliveries, to be paid June 1 under 1934 contracts. Total distribution about 12500 dollars, aiding growers and family needs as favorable beet conditions boost 1935 planting.
The Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah demand a Southern Utah man be appointed to the state road commission, arguing the region has 60 percent of the roads. They accuse the governor of bias toward Salt Lake County and threaten action if recognition is denied.
William Metcalf of Gunnison celebrated his 80th birthday with two dinner parties hosted by his son John E. Metcalf and later Junius Metcalf. Family and old friends shared meals, stories, and a cake surrounded by May queen decorations. Metcalf, born 1855 in Salt Lake City, was a longtime stockman and civic leader, serving as Sanpete county commissioner and Utah state representative, and leading Gunnison Valley banks and irrigation concerns.
Kimbal Larsen, chief linotype operator for The News, resumes work after welcoming a baby girl. Thursday six o'clock birth blessed the Larsen family with Myrna, a seven-pound daughter, and both mother and child are reported doing splendidly.
Two wards plan joint morning services at 10 o clock next Sunday with songs, readings, solos, recitations, and tributes to mothers. Gunnison ward at the chapel features a full program led by J Clayton Watts and Crystal Christiansen. Hamilton ward hosts events at the Scout lodge with Delmar Higham and Mrs Leverne Pickett among the participants. Public invited to participate in the tribute to mothers.
Mrs. B. S. Eggertsen came home early this week after a week away visiting family. She spent time with a daughter in Helper and a son in Salt Lake City and attended a band contest at Prica.
Mrs Lorin Jackson and baby along with Buddy Johnson and his sister were treated at Saline hospital after a car driven by the Johnson boy struck a tree near Redmond. Mrs Jackson suffered a deep wrist cut and 12 stitches were required. The baby sustained bruises and minor cuts. Johnson had a scalp wound. Victims were returning from Gonnson where Buddy is enrolled at a CCC camp.
Mrs Hyrum Christiansen entertained about fourteen friends of her son Tom at their home Sunday afternoon. The event celebrated Lee’s twelfth birthday with games and refreshments. Miss Beth Farr returned to Gunnison Friday after visiting Ogden with friends and relatives.
