The Dirigo class graduation at the Washington high school auditorium honored 32 students with diplomas enabling fall entry to the high school. Prof J Lyman Smith of Snow College Ephraim gave the address, urging higher learning standards.
At Washington school last Friday evening the P T A chose Mrs Leslie Kidman as president Leo D Bardsley as vice president and Mrs Charlotte Villard as secretary treasurer to serve the coming year All officers were re elected and will form the executive board with Mrs J W Jones and Arthur Larson The group voted to affiliate with state and national organizations with work to begin in the fall Readings and music showcased the sixth to eighth grades including a piano duet poems and a vocal solo by Harold Bradley.
Sixteen years ago on April 30 Miss Josie Curtis arrived in Gunnison to take charge of the Presbyterian mission. On May first she became a subscriber of the Gazette later Gunnison Valley News. She adopted a strictly business method paying subscriptions a day before expiration each year, visiting the office to square with the editor and secure another year. The publisher praises the method and hopes others will follow.
Gunnison ward Sunday school will observe Mother's Day next Sunday at the Relief Society hall. The program includes music by Miss Alta Mermill, prayers, readings, recitations, and several talks by community members such as Mayor Parley Christiansen. Mrs Donald Hansen of Ephraim visits the city two weeks as a guest of her parents.
At a Chicago meeting beet sugar producers formed the United States Beet Sugar association with members from Ohio to Washington. Stephen H. Love of Salt Lake City was elected president with W. L. Petrikin Denver as vice president and other executives named. The group reported about 18 million bags produced last season and urged policy changes to curb Cuban sugar for fair competition. Love warned the market faces losses due to overproduction in Cuba and tariff favors.
Lions club of the twenty eighth district selects Gunnison native Lion Jones over John E. Pixton of Murray at Ogden convention. Jones wins 24 to 11 with Pixton resigning, attendees and Notables praise his civic leadership and past Lions service. Tooele to host 1927 district convention.
Dr. W H Hunt a Salt Lake physician and his party were injured when their Packard ran off the road near Centerfield and turned turtle. A honey bee allegedly caused the accident by lighting on his chin. They were treated at Gunnison before continuing northward. Also notes a wedding shower hosted by Washington school faculty for bride Mrs John Clift with gifts and Mah Jongg rook prizes.
Word came this week of the death of Masry Jensen at Salt Lake County Hospital Salt Lake City following tuberculosis. Burial was held there Tuesday with Mr and Mrs J H Wilson attending from Gunnison area.
Miss Andren Childs received many gifts at a well appointed miscellaneous shower held at Mrs. Binj Childs home last Wednesday. About thirty guests attended and luncheon followed an evening of progressive 700 with Mrs. Martin Peterson and Mrs. Diolorus Peterann winning honors. Hostess Mrs. Ben Childs was assisted by Miss Trilma Francis and Roberta Childs.
A county wide road control reform was decided at Mt. Pleasant with A A Beck of Centerfield named road patrolman covering from Redmond to Manti and Gunnison to the Juab line. Sterling will be served by Ross Thompson. Edgar Larson and Edwin Larson oversee Manti and Gunnison-Logan highways respectively. The plan aims to keep highways in constant good condition and save money. Gunnison was chosen as the Democratic county convention site for the coming fall.
Pupils from Gunnison and Centerfield joined health officers to celebrate National Health Day with parades at Washington and Lincoln schools. The events featured banners, health talks, songs, and recitations. Gunnison dominated the athletic contests with clear wins across multiple events. Mr and Mrs Harold Lewis visited from Richfield, staying with J. E. Lewis and J. W. Duffin.
Elmer J. Snow died after nearly five months battling amoebic dysentery at Salina hospital. Born August 1898 in Sterling, he lived in Gunnison most of his life, was active in the Mormon church and Modern Woodmen lodge, and survived by his parents and nine siblings. Funeral services were held at Gunnison Valley High School with Bishop H. C. Olsen presiding. interment at Gunnison cemetery.
Over 200 students from the grade and high school along with several adults received the first diphtheria antitoxin inoculation on Tuesday. Drs Hagan and Aldous with nurses and assistants managed a smooth operation at the school and city hall, with a second and third doses scheduled for next Monday and May 17, each aimed at lifelong immunity.
Dr and Mrs T M Aldous were summoned to Ogden after the death of Dr Aldous father at a hospital shortly after one o clock from pneumonia following stomach ulcer surgery. The 70 year old, long active in the drug business, retired years ago and was widely known in northern Utah.
