City officials enforce strict licensing on itinerant merchants arriving in Gunnison to sell wares. Home merchants who pay taxes and licenses urged to support local business. outsiders must meet license requirements or be discouraged.
Gunnison J C Penney manager Ronald C. Norman went to Salt Lake City for a weeklong buying trip with eastern wholesalers and placed a large order for the store’s fall and winter stock.
The Southern Utah Baseball League announces the spring opening on Sunday May 29 with games in two halves. Five towns Monroe Gunnison Salina Richfield and Elsinore are set to participate Manti may join if it accepts within two weeks. Uniform admission is 40 cents and two imports per team are allowed.
Gunnison City tightens water use rules for lawn sprinkling with district based times from May through September. Violators face fines up to 25 dollars and costs.
Health lecturer Chow Chow visited Washington school last Friday and gave an over two hour talk on health and cleanliness. He compared vegetables, milk, candies and foods to avoid, urged clean faces and clothes, and especially promoted hand washing to keep germs from food and mouths. He entertained the children and may return to Gunnison someday.
Gunnison experiences an unprecedented building boom as about 28000 is invested in new homes. Five residences are under construction including a 3500 bungalow by George Larson and a 3000 four room home for Mrs. Laura Wangelin, both contractor Joseph Blixt. Other projects include a 5000 six room bungalow for miller Marius Jensen and a 4000 modern bungalow by N L Hermansen. Metcalf plans a 10000 seven room residence with premium finishes. Downtown Main Street sees store repairs and a Kozi Place cabaret renovation poised to reopen as a premier Southern Utah venue.
Hyrum Fredrickson, longtime janitor at Washington public school, was presented a dark oak rocking chair by scholars and faculty last week. The chair’s rich upholstery reflects the deep respect and affection the student body holds for him after twelve years of faithful service.
Gunnison tops eight Sanpete towns in Farm Bureau membership with 90 members, ahead of Mt. Pleasant with 62 and Ephraim with 43. Attorney E E Hoffmann of Richfield visited Gunnison on legal matters while many locals traveled to Salina for visits. Reports list several residents returning home after funerals, a Wasatch Academy student returning due to the winter closure, and Wasatch academy related epidemic news. A large crowd attended the burial of Mrs A E Sorenson last Saturday at the Relief Society Hall and cemetery. Bishop Ernest L Swalberg led services with speakers Joseph Christensen A C Fjeldsted and Brigham Jonsen. Wreaths came from the Eutre Nous club city officials Modern Woodmen of America and Relief Society workers. Pallbearers were Gunnison city council members J W Jones Anthony Madsen Martin Peterson Ira Overfelt CH Childs and N L Hermansen.
The Age Club presented a refreshing program last week with talents from the boys including a song by The Avalrdipate Chink and a viollo solo by Midget Bunk. The Brown and Gold book’s second issue sold quickly after a lucky number giveaway. Madsen visited to discuss legislative work. senior program featured Yonge, Ban lomine, Elin Weldste, and Elina Pjelated in various acts.
Miss Sarah Tooth, public health nurse for Sanpete County, visited Washington school last Friday and praised its health and sanitation. She stated Washington was one of the cleanest schools in the district with no hesitancy.
A vocal council for the Upih Auto Mobile Association was organized in Gunnison last Thursday with N. L. Tormansen as chairman Ira Overstelt W. Joules M Beauregard and Charles Rasmussen named as members George G. Calkins state field secretary outlined goals for the creation and highway publicity to draw tourists to Salt Lake Grand Canyon towns He organized chapters at Marravale Nielfield Salina Manti and Mt Pleasant and plans to appoint two deputies in each county to inspect license ministers and enforce traffic laws The association aims to unite southern and southeastern Utah towns to boost tourist traffic and road development with campaigns for new members and a gathering of councils to judge progress
A. B. Nelson, a trader and stockman, praised the Gunnison Valley during a Monday visit, noting its promising prospects for settlement and wealth. He recently bought a claim in Winery County and forecasts a boom due to oil activity and growing opportunities in the area. Nelson was joined by several associates during his extended business trip.
Mrs J A Haan entertained about twenty guests at an anniversary gathering on Wednesday evening at her home on Route 1 Progressive Five Hundred games provided fun. Prizes went to Mrs Hen Raper first and Mrs O H Halverson second with Mrs Eva Jensen as consolation. Christy Madsen and Miles Madsen helped serve and the hostess received many presents while refreshments were served.
