A Centerfield boy Howard Bardsley aged six suffered severe burns from neck to hips when his clothing caught fire while burning brush with his uncle. A playmate saved him by dousing flames with water. He was treated by Dr Ilagan and improved. doctors fear skin grafting may be needed in Salt Lake.
Major-General R. W. Young recently returned from overseas spent hours in Gunnison with Mrs. Young touring southern sections for the Fifth Liberty Loan. The Gunnison band offered an impromptu serenade Sunday afternoon, drawing a large crowd to hear its chosen pieces. Members have practiced diligently and the band is expected to be a key feature in upcoming summer festivities.
Gunnison plans a strong baseball squad with an all star effort. A special Ma tronous club meeting set committees to arrange details and begin regular practices by early next week. The park lease was cleared for team use and ground work plus grandstand repairs will start. A start fund of 3140 was subscribed by local business and residents including Gunnison Valley Bank, J C Penney Co, Southern Utah Power, Gunnison Valley News, and others.
Mrs T G Nethery of Hidfield was guest of honor at a Home Missionary Society meeting in the chapel last Tuesday. Rev and Mrs Nethery soon head to Council Bluffs Iowa for an appointment. Twenty ladies attended a social with music and readings, followed by refreshments. A gift emblem bearing members’ autographs was presented.
The Gunnison Gazette is taken over by new owners forming the Gunnison Valley News. The paper will continue the Gazette’s legacy, merge two offices, and boast upgraded printing. Publisher H. W. Cherry invites locals to submit news and help shape the paper.
W R Parkhill an engineer and an associate from Berkeley California and C Fl Weat from Denver visited Sanpete and Sevier counties last week to study land and irrigation conditions and assess local appraisal needs.
Lee Kenner manager for the Manti Livestock company traveled to the Salina canyon ranch with a registered two year old Hereford bull. The animal, recently acquired from Salt Lake, cost the company 2500 dollars.
The elders conference at the L. D. church last Sunday drew strong attendance and deep interest. It was the first event of its kind in Guynison with Ernest Bramwell of Munti delivering the principal address.
General Superintendent Prod Weinse reports the cab arid tabar plant work will begin soon with special machinery. Construction progress is noted as the first planting nears completion and the bee crop outlook is encouraging, with fields showing strong plant growth and harvest readiness.
Fred Rosenhind, a prosperous farmer in Christensburg, was the first to subscribe to the Newe under the new management. He visited town last Saturday, read the paper’s echonmo, and quickly enrolled for a year, promptly sending his check.

The Centorti eh Parm Inavivesdu held a meeting last Monday to discuss eradicating the alfalfa weevil. President Chrin A Peterson opened the session with plans for county cooperation, featuring J Edward Taylor of the U S Bureau of Entomology and Lowry Nelson on spray methods and a live demonstration at Centerfield. Committees will visit farmers to secure cooperation and install spraying pumps on fields to curb the weevil threat.
The publisher announces a name change from Gonulson Gazette to Gunnison Valley News. The paper aims to be a valley wide family publication covering city, county, and state news, highlighting growth, new industries, and development in Ullah as the garden spot of the valley.
The Southern Utah Presbyterian association will hold an important meeting at the Gunnison chapel on Friday May 9 with three sessions and attendees from nearby towns. Mrs G E Davis of Salt Lake City will address the afternoon gathering and Rev Theodore Martin of Mantl will speak at the evening session. The meeting is open and extends a cordial invitation to all.
