In Shabbytown decay and weariness empresse the streets while Glossyville blooms with paint and pride. Strangers note the gulf between seedy decline and polished renewal as Glossyville’s charm attracts new residents.
A 1928 clean-up drive urged by June Metcalf calls Gunnison residents to join in a “Keep Clean” effort. Citizens across clubs, churches, schools, and Boy Scouts will organize, repair windows, paint fences, remove manure, and plan plantings while a health-focused ordinance is readied. Shortlisted tasks include water quality, garbage disposal, outbuildings, roads, and sidewalks. A mass meeting will form the organizing body and appoint leaders for a rapid campaign.
The American Legion plans a $100,000 permanent endowment to decorate graves of American soldiers who died in Europe. Funds raised through its 11,000 posts will stay in the U S under a Legion supervised committee. 32,000 graves abroad include 31,400 in France and Belgium, 140 in Scotland, 40 in Ireland, and one at sea. Memorial Day is target for fund availability.
Publishers may extend renewals in good faith and mail copies for one year after expiration at second class rates. After one year, unless renewed with payment or promise, mailings are charged the transient second class rate of one cent per four ounces, with stamps.
The Gunnison Valley News urges patience in collecting arrears and warns that under post office rules delinquent subscribers will be dropped from the mail list or incur added postage. Publishers say prompt payment keeps the paper flowing and avoids price hikes, stamps, and cutoffs.
Mrs Ed Oberg hosted a Friday evening party for her birthday with about thirty guests. Guests played cards and enjoyed a luncheon. Local visitors include Niels Sorenson and Angus Willardsen from Salt Lake, Joseph Christensen from Bingham, and Miss Ella Webb returning to Lehi. Reba Braithwaite of Manti and several Emery residents also visited, with Erastus Jacobsen staying the night.
The Clarion Relief Society marked the first relief society anniversary with a program and banquet for 135 guests, followed by a dance. Duane and Garth Frandsen hosted a birthday gathering for 20 friends. Redmond visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Orrin Palmer. Claude Michaelson and Lafe Frandsen attended a Piute irrigation run setting in Salina. Mrs. Leslie Kidman hosted Leona Frandsen birthday games and refreshments. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Metcalf of Enterfield visited their daughter Mrs. Alvie Lund.
The Axtell Relief Society marked sixteen years since its 1907 founding with a Saturday program of music, songs, speeches, and addresses led by president Mrs. Matilda Whitbeck. Attendees included Mrs. Whitbeck, Emily Bench, Caroline Jensen, and Bishop L. Despain. local visitors were C K Christensen, H O Peterson, Lehi Olsen, and Ruel Nielson family among others.
Gunnison residents praised the U A C Glee Club during a large Monday night concert at the high school auditorium. The twenty six member ensemble, under Prof C R Johnson, opened an extended tour with encore after encore and plans to visit Seyer and Sanpete counties before heading north. Ray Garner leads as president with Jackson Trice as manager, and the program featured solo and ensemble pieces including The Four Winds and When the Frost Is on The Pumpkin.
Westside beet growers including Clarion Westview and Fayette discussed easing freight costs to keep the factory running. Joseph Christensen outlined a 1,500 acre pledge contingent on equalized transportation. Redmond factory prices with deductions for freight were cited as a model to follow. Road repair reports followed with no immediate action. State road official Stewart, marooned by storms, will assess shale class in Gunnison next week.
Apostle Richard Lyman, returning from a stake conference in Richfield, visited Gunnison last Monday with a committee to confer with the ward bishopric building committee and officials about a proposed new church. Several sites were reviewed but no decision was reached. final action will be announced later.
Last week in Gunnison Three Husky boys arrived, with three births at home of Larson Her mansen and Madsen families bringing joy to parents and friends. Mrs Madsen hosted a 500 party with thirty guests, decorations of carnations and snapdragons, followed by refreshments at five thirty.
